As far as I know, nobody ever won two acting Oscars or Tonys in the same night, but I found out that Shirley Knight won two acting Emmys in 1995:

    – Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special: Indictment: The McMartin Trial

    and

    – Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series: NYPD Blue

Any other actor has achieved this feat?

Stockard Channing is the most recent winning two in 2002. Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The West Wing and Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for The Matthew Shepard Story.

At the 2010 Creative Arts ceremony, Neil Patrick Harris won for guest starring on Glee and hosting the Tonys.

Guest Emmys aren’t handed out on the same night as the main telecast.

You mean two competitive wins for the same ceremony year.

Glenda Jackson in 1972, (she had 3 nominations for the same role) strange?

Everyone who won a ”Super Emmy” from ’74, but those should not count.

    James Earl Jones in 1991.

Is it still possible to get two noms in the same category for different roles? I think Lee Grant is the last person to do that, in 1971.

Ciscely Tyson won an Emmy and a “Super Emmy” which was some weird thing they had one year where the winners could win a second Emmy for the same performance. It was kind of controversial and criticised and never done again. (I forget the details of it but the whole thing is chronicled in Tom O’Neil’s Emmy book)

I think the Super Emmy was “Actor of the Year” or “Comedy Actor of the Year”. Which was stupid because of course those people (or most of them) won their real category

From the 2012-13 Emmy Rules, under “Performer Awards”:

“A performer may enter multiple achievements in a performing category if the achievements are for different programs.”

Technically, someone can get two nominations in the same category for the same role, for different shows.  Presumably, the category would have to be one of the Guest ones, unless there are two shows that share a regular character that would both qualify as lead or both as supporting.
(Clarification: for different characters, they could be both lead or both supporting – could a case have been made for Lisa Kudrow being nominated in supporting for both Friends and Mad About You at any point?)
