Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) could reap a bid this year but she is not a lock.

Only four African American women have even contended in this race — Debbie Allen (“Fame”; 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985), Alfre Woodard (“St. Elsewhere”; 1986), Regina Taylor (“I’ll Fly Away”; 1992, 1993) and Cicely Tyson (“Sweet Justice”; 1995) — and none won.

Which other African American actress were snubbed and did not even contend?

It’s not about the race. It’s about the talent behind these actors. This is the kind of talk that provokes racism between all of us.

Angela Bassett submitted in lead for ER a couple years ago.

A lack of black actresses nominated has far more to do with things beyond the academy’s control, namely that there have not been that many African American female leads on dramas that are worthy of recognition.  The only recent example of a drama lead actress that I can name off the top of my head is Jada Pinkett Smith on HawthroRNe and that is what, the 500th most egregious Emmy snub ever?

^ That can’t be right, that’s way too high for Jada.

Angela Bassett submitted in lead for ER a couple years ago.

I haven’t seen her in ER (didn’t even know she was so big in the show to be submitted in Lead, in fact). But I could see her being an worthy nominee. However, I don’t know if her work in the show was deserving. Was it?

I guess it just comes down to that unfortunate thing we talk about a lot around here: there aren’t many great roles for african americans on tv recently.

Bullshit. This is not a merit issue but an opportunity issue. If you fail to cast non-white talent in well written material — chances are non-white performers who are doing good work in less than desirable productions will be ignored.

    It is both.

My point is that this is not an Emmy problem, but an industry problem.

Hum, but if people who aren’t white aren’t given worthy material, they won’t be worthy of a nomination. That was thedemonhog’s point. Nowhere did thedemonhog say that there aren’t talented black actresses that would be worthy if given the roles and shows that explore their talent and with lots of potential. It’s an opportunity issue, but someone can’t earn merit if they are not given said opportunity. So saying black actresses don’t merit recognition for the terrible few opportunities they do get isn’t to insult  those women, but just a way to talk about the reality right now.

That said, I wouldn’t mind Kerry Washington nominated, even though I wouldn’t put her in my personal top 6.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, she is in my top 6, but mostly because this season hasn’t been the best for female lead roles in dramas.

Oh, and Khandi Alexander for “Treme” is a pretty huge snub if you ask me.

I didn’t watch ER that much, but it was for the last season. I remember Tom making a thread about the possibility and some people predicting her.

Regina King submitted in Lead Actress for Southland for the first 3 seasons of the show, and was never nominated. Though she was HIGHLY deserving of a nominations!

She didn’t submit in Lead. In fact, I think this is her first year submitting in Lead for that series. Previously, she has submitted in Supporting. Though I could be wrong.

I have always thought of Regina King and Khandi Alexander as supporting actresses, although I think I know in the back of my head that the latter is submitting in lead this season.
