Emmy voters are notorious for rubber stamping the same, tired, undeserving Emmy nominees.

So let’s hear it…which categories need a whole new crop of nominees?

Right off the bat, I’d say Comedy Series needs an overhaul. Critics and audiences have been complaining about the quality of “Glee,” “The Office” and “Big Bang” this season. All three of these shouldn’t return to the race this year. I’d argue that “Modern Family” was painfully mediocre this season. I’d yank it from Comedy Series and only nod Burrell, Bowen and maybe Ferguson in the major categories. There are a wealth of shows that could fill those vacant four slots: “Community,” “Louie,” “Nurse Jackie,” “Happy Endings,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” (which will), etc.

The comedy supporting categories need new blood as well. Lynch, White and Vergara have become silly caricatures on their shows. And SNL is just so awful these days so Wiig can go, too. A combination of Merritt Weaver, Eve Best, Anna Deveare Smith, the “Community” ladies, Jane Adams (“Hung”), Malick, Mayim Bialik, Kaitlin Olson, Gabby Sidibe, Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Busy Phillips, etc. should round out this category with Bowen and Krakowski.

And no way should the four “Modern Family” men and Colfer return to supporting actor. Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Nick Offerman, Damon Wayans, Jr., the “It’s Always Sunny” team, Tracy Morgan, Jack MacBrayer, John Benjamin Hickey, etc. would richly deserve to benefit from an overhaul.

So who’s on YOUR list? Discuss.

Drama Lead Actress. This category, usually dominated by repeat nominees and Oscar nominees/winners, needs a huge dose of fresh blood. We’re guaranteed at least one newcomer (Claire Danes), and hopefully there will be more. In the last 5 years, there have usually been only 1-2 worthy nominees in the category, and that needs to change.

    Worthy

    2007 lineup-Falco
    2008 lineup-None
    2009 lineup-None
    2010 lineup-Britton
    2011 lineup-Britton, Enos

    Should have been booted

2007 lineup-Arquette, Driver, Field, Hargitay, Sedgwick
2008 lineup-Close, Field, Hargitay, Hunter, Sedgwick
2009 lineup-Close, Field, Hargitay, Hunter, Moss, Sedgwick
2010 lineup-Close, Hargitay, Jones, Margulies, Sedgwick
    2011 lineup-Bates, Hargitay, Margulies, Moss

    Every comedy category needs this.

Series: Yank out the three you mentioned, which, if nominated, will only be in there due to rubber-stamping.
Actor: It looks like Don Cheadle will be getting a nomination despite the fact that the show is horrible.
Actress: Remove all traces of showtime, excpet Falco and Parker who have had exceptional work this past season.
Supp. Actor: Stonestreet and O’Neill have done nothing of note this season.
Supp. Actress: Lynch and Vergara are now rubber stamps. White is dreadful on Hot in Cleveland. I disagree with you about Wiig though, she’s having a great season.

remove all traces of showtime except Falco and Parker? It’s more simple say to not nominate Linney lol

There is turnover and new nominees every year in most of the categories mentioned so far. The work that’s recognized is also pretty good, even if Gold Derby’s favourites aren’t always nominated.

If you want categories with minimal turnover and really stale nominees in terms of quality, look no further than Reality Host and Reality-Competion Program. Variety Series is also starting to become a problematic category.

Supporting Actor Comedy indeed. Only Burrel and Ferguson should return. Dillahunt, Offerman, Scott, someone from Happy Endings all would make better nominees than that ridiculous charicature of Stonestreet.

Scott is in Lead this year and Glover, Wayans Jr., or Greenfield deserve the other two spots you didn’t mention.  I understand that is three but any combination of Dillahunt, Offerman, and the three I mentioned would put me over the moon.

I do not agree with you guys about Chris Colfer, I think this year deserves to be nominated for the episode dance with somebody (has better episode than last year for me, felt that he was pleading to give him an Emmydeserves to be nominated more than Stonestreet and O’Neill, but they’re right the supporting actress category needs new blood, Lynch, White and Vergara not have great performance this year like last year

I think modern family deserves to be nominated but not win this season of glee was better than the second but does not deserve to be nominated but have good episodes in which can drain and be nominated, BigBang and the office have no strength this year as last year

AH I had forgotten, Lea Michele deserves the nomination have an episode with a very solid performance in Choke

It’s funny, because I’m actually predicting that those 3 comedies (“Big Bang”, “Glee”, “Office”) will all be snubbed, as I think they will be replaced by “Curb”, “Louie” and “Veep”.

I wish Colfer and at least one of the guys from “Modern Family” would be snubbed. This way, people like Damon Wayans Jr., Matt Walsh and Adam Pally could have an actual shot.

Comedy Lead Actress and Drama Supporting Actress could use an overhaul.

I would love love love for Marcia Cross to get a nomination for her fantastic performances that she has been giving week after week.

I would also love for Sandra Oh to get back in the Supporting Actress Drama race.

Happy Endings needs to crash the Comedy Categories, Parks and Rec needs to be recognized in more ways than those two nods last year (strangely I won’t be that upset if Offerman isn’t one of them), it may have been 11 years since it premiered, but Curb Your Enthusiasm deserves to come back possibly even win for such a stellar season.

At times I feel silly believing Community will actually make it in, but I also feel it will be some sort of extremely deserved fluke that will result in just 1 or 2 nods, almost like Parks or Scrubs even though they could deservingly occupy more than one writing slot. Cougar Town should also be on the list everywhere it can. The Middle, Louie, Girls and Veep also deserve some spots.

I hated The Office this year, I can go as far as saying that I have more fun complaining, rolling my eyes and getting upset with Glee than while watching Modern Family. The Big Bang Theory had some real stinkers this season, all four can go away. In fact of the returning nominees, 30 Rock deserves that nod more than those four.

And can these people just understand that Merrit Wever needs to be nominated? And that Jane Krakowski needs to stay for her best season to date? And that it’s Wendie Mallick and not Betty White who deserves the attention for Hot in Cleveland?

If we’re really talking about category overhauls, it’ll have to go deeper than complaining over nominees you’re tired of seeing rewarded. That’s just sour grapes. It’ll have to involve either removing the deadweight Academy membership and seeking newer and more inclusive members, or changing the rules of what’s eligible and ineligible each year, which will be controversial no matter how it’s attempted. Those kinds of reforms might get a fresher rotation of contenders each year, but it won’t please everyone. There are some voters who will just want to check off Mariska Hargitay’s name each time she’s eligible, or Jon Cryer’s, or Betty White’s, etc. That’s the way that goes. One category in particular I’d like to see overhauled is Host for a Reality or Reality/Competition Program. It’s shameful that no reality or nonfiction host has been cited yet. They go to the same pool of Reality/Competition contenders each year, and then with no imagination at all pick Jeff Probst to win every time. Unless they change the name of the category to “Host for a Reality/Competition Program,” then there should be some representation of reality and nonfiction series host in there too. I’d like to see a bake-off of some sort where the top three vote-getters for reality/nonfiction shows are chosen to compete with the top three vote-getters for reality/competition shows. That way, you could at least have an even field to give Probst some real competition. Once the category is expanded to six nominees, I could see Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron, and Jeff Probst getting in on the reality/competition side, and then maybe Mike Rowe, Bear Grylls, and Anthony Bourdain getting in on the reality/nonfiction side. That could be a competitive race. That’s the kind of category overhauls I’d like to see happen.
