We know where most of the major Best Actress contenders stand with their episode submissions. We have a good idea where Wright, Danes, Henson, Schilling, Wilson, and Davis will look to submit. There are two or three tapes each of those women will probably choose from, but Margulies could arguably submit any of these nine episodes.

Since her big submission mistake for The Good Wife season one, she’s been spot-on with her selections. In Sickness and The Last Call were both winning tapes, and Parenting Made Easy maybe would have won her another Emmy if Homeland wouldn’t have existed in 2012. So, if she decides on a unique submission this year, she could be a wild card for the win.

Margulies has shown so much range this past season, meeting the writing each week with a different and fresh approach. But there isn’t an obvious answer in picking one episode to be compete against Robin Wright and Viola Davis because of the complex variation in each of her different performances.

Which episode do you think she should she submit? (Does that differ from your personal favorite Margulies performance this year?)

Winning Ugly or Sticky Cotent will probably end up being what she submits. They are both showier, more emotionally effective showcases for her. But I think her performances are in Mind’s Eye and Oppo Research are more intriguing pieces of acting. Mind’s Eye is unique, something that voters will remember whether they like it or not. It’s the most graphic investigation of character voters will see in this category. Also, Mind’s Eye allows Margulies to run the gamut of “baity” emotions (yelling, crying, asserting power, vulnerability, ect.).

Thank goodness for Claire Danes.  I am not entirely sure who would have won, but “Parenting Made Easy” would have been among the worst winning tapes that her category has seen.  We all remember the climax of that one, right?  “I butt-called her.”

Wasn’t Kathy Bates considered a second place behind Claire Danes that year? ‘Blue Ribbon Panel’ would have been a stronger and more complete submission for Julianna Margulies than ‘Parenting Made Easy,’ but of course she had to pick an episode where she had an obvious crying scene. She doesn’t have one this year. She has an overall great performance in Oppo Research, even though it’s not a baity enough submission.

Anyway, I’m more likely to predict that both she and Claire Danes will get snubbed this year.

    Should: Mind’s Eye
    Will: Winning Ugly

Both good submissions, as is Oppo Research or The Debate.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Knowing Margulies and what she/her assistant likes to submit, she will probably go with Winning Ugly, and I can’t begrudge her for that. The amount of sympathy you feel for Alicia after watching that episode may be enough to coerce Emmy voters again. (Funny, if she does submit Winning Ugly, this will be her second consecutive submission where she ends the tape crying in Chris Noth’s arms.) But her best, most calibrated work is in Mind’s Eye (and Oppo Research). My problem with her submitting The Debate is that it’s one of the weaker episodes and the writing is kind of sloppy. (Like Alicia’s misplaced lines about feminism at the end, to Diane of all people.)

    “Oppo Research”.

“Mind’s Eye” and “The Debate” have almost zero bait factor. “Winning Ugly” is too silly of an episode.

Yes, you’re right, at least regarding the Editors’ rankings. I looked back at both the Editors’ and Experts’ predictions, and the former averaged out as ranking Bates second overall (for a hilarious disparity, the Experts ranked her last).

I remember the experts not finding the tape to be that competitive (at least compared to her previous year’s submission), whereas Bates had a bit more emotion to play off of in her episode (which might’ve been the series finale). The fact that it was for a David E. Kelley show no doubt made many wary of a possible upset.

Calculating the mean tallies for that year.
    EDITORS:
    Claire Danes = 1.00

    Julianna Margulies = 3.28
    Michelle Dockery = 3.85
    Elisabeth Moss – 4.70
    Glenn Close = 5.50

Ok I think its a bit wild to assume Margulies is back in. Yes I know, she won last year! But Drama Actress may as well be renamed bloodbath. Lest we forget the last time the site pre-empted emmy nominations, when Tom O’Neil was dissusing tapes with her during season 4 it didn’t pan out. So maybe don’t risk it in discussing.

Anyway I’ll chime in: Oppo Research
