The Martin Freeman/Felicity Huffman rule is simple.  Both of these winners rode to upset wins based not just on the strength of their submitted episode (Huffman) or submitted performance (Freeman in Sherlock) but also based on voters seeing multiple aspects of that performers work in the category.  Huffman on her co stars tapes.  And Freeman who won a category that everyone had locked to Matt Bomer based on his Fargo co star Colin Hanks being a co nominee and voters viewing his 1-2 punch of Fargo/Sherlock work.

With this new voting system, with the potential of voters sitting on every acting category they please, some nominees will have more than 1 episode seen by voters.  Some nominees, including some have as locks (IE Allison Janney) will only have one.

So how does it break down?

    4 episodes
Jon Hamm (Christina Hendricks, Guest Comedy Actor, Tina Fey Guest Actress)
    Tituss Burgess (Krakowski, Hamm, Fey)

    3 episodes
Jeffrey Tambor (Gaby Hoffman, Brad Whitford)
    Gaby Hoffman (Tambor, Whitford)
Louie CK (Pamela Adler, SNL episode in Guest)
Julia Louis Dreyfus, Anna Chulmsky, and Tony Hale
Kate McKinnon (Louis CK, Bill Hader guest tapes)
Christine Baranski, Alan Cumming, (Michael J Fox)

    2 episodes
William H Macy (Joan Cusack Guest Comedy Actress)
    Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks
Viola Davis (Cicely Tyson Guest Drama Actress)
Taraji P. Henson (Kate McKinnon SNL episode)
Jane Krakowski (Jon Hamm Guest Actor, not in Burgess or Fey)
    Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell
    Claire Danes (F. Murray Abraham)
    Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks
Emilia Clarke (short scene on Headey’s)  Haven’t watched Dinkalage or Rigg so I’m not sure how much the GOT tapes help each other)
    Joanne Froggatt and Jim Carter

    Single episodes
    Anthony Anderson
    Don Cheadle
    Edie Falco
    Lisa Kudrow
    Amy Poehler
    Amy Schumer
    Lily Tomlin
    WIll Forte
    Matt Leblanc
    Allison Janney
    Niecy Nash
    Liev Schreiber
    Jeff Daniels
    Tatiana Maslany
    Uzo Aduba
    Andre Braugher
    Adam Driver
    Keegan Michael Hey
    Mayim Bialik

    * still don’t know yet if Kyle Chandler overlaps with Ben Mendelsohn or how Wright and Spacey’s noms overlap with Michael Kelly Rachel Brosnahan, and Reg E. Cathey.  House of Cards actors could potentially be seen by voters on 5 occasions.

So who does this rule change help the most and may possibly Freeman/Huffman their way as a result?  On first glance it seems to help Jon Hamm, Tituss Burgess, Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Viola Davis (her 2 best episodes could be seen), and a couple supporting actress comedy contenders who will need the help against Janney (Chulmsky, McKinnon, Hoffman, Krakowski especially).  Perhaps the Better Call Saul boys as well.

I have to imagine if you vote in 1 comedy category you will vote in them all.  Ditto drama.  We may have a lot of cross over voters seeing multiple tapes. Or not.  But it;s a factor this year that I find very difficult to forsee what effect it may have on the results.  1 tape alone by Chulmsky/Hoffman/Krakowski cannot take down 20 mins of Janney.  But 2 or 3 tapes against her?  If seen by voters it could play a big role here.  The tough part is we don’t know how many cross over voters there will be and if they will honestly watch all the tapes.

Also the three supporting “Freak Show” ladies and two supporting gents will all be seen on each others’ reels. I wonder if this can help Sarah Paulson and/or Finn Wittrock?

I think Michael Kelly is greatly helped by Rachel Brosnahan submission for House Of Cards

Maybe it’s just me but during the House Of Cards I kinda saw Doug as a monster because we were made to think he killed Rachel so either the voters will the range or they will hate the character.

I wonder if episode submissions in one category will play a role in another and to what extent. For example, a voter may judge drama actress and see Hendricks’ performance in Moss’ episode, and doesn’t judge supporting actress until a few days later and Hendricks’ work they saw previously will have little impact on how they rank Hendricks in drama supporting actress race, or maybe that voter doesn’t bother to judge supporting actress at all.

Regarding Martin Freeman, I think he may still have won even if he weren’t on Fargo. Sherlock unexpectedly had a big year in 2014 after winning nothing for the first two seasons. And the ratings system used in Mini/TV Movie instead of ranked voting system might have something to do with this. If a voter were Sherlock fan, they could give Freeman the highest score and give the other five guys scores of zero, destroying Freeman’s competition completely. However, in ranked voting system, that voter might have ranked Bomer, who was the presumed frontrunner, at no. 6, but they still had to rank others between no. 2-5, and sometimes a nominee with the most #2 and/or #3 votes could win.

“I have to imagine if you vote in 1 comedy category you will vote in them all.”

    I doubt this.

So now the same person votes in all the comedy or drama categories?

Christine Baranski also has four, not three. She has her own, Alan’s, Michael’s and she is also nominated for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for ‘The Big Bang Theory’.

Schumer isn’t help by Giamatti’s episode because she only has about one minute of screentime in it.

Bialik doesn’t appear in Baranski’s episode.

Well, she was funny in the outtake with Giamatti. And with Dennis Quaid too.

Bialik appears in the beginning of an episode. Yes, that doesn’t help her. but still.
