The fall season is near, so which show do you think will have trouble in its second season? Share your thoughts.

I said The Crown, and that’s because I didn’t even like the first season all that much. I expect the story to become an unfocused mess in its 2nd season.

I’d be very surprised if it’s The Crown. Peter Morgan has proved with The Queen and The Audience before that he can brilliantly write this whole period of history.

Stranger Things seems the most likely to me.

But neither of those were TV shows, so I’m not sure if he can sustain the narrative consistency of the first season into future seasons, including the second.

It could be The Handmaid’s Tale since they no longer have the book as a blue print.

I voted for This is Us, because it’s on Network TV and it feels like whenever a network show has great reviews and award attention on the first season, there’s a huge decrease in quality in the second.

But it could actually happen with any and all of them, really.

I thought that the slump for The Handmaid’s Tale started in the back half of the season, so I was shocked by how well it did in the nominations. This is Us is the obvious choice now, but I voted The Handmaid’s Tale to be true to myself. It looks like its foundation might be strong enough though that it will be able to weather a slump, a bit like Homeland. Stranger Things is another obvious choice, but the team there has my trust after the tight first season. The Crown does not strike me as the type of show that would get blasted for slumping, as the first season was not a water-cooler show anyway.

I totally agree about Handmaid’s Tale, which is so frustrating for me. I was looking forward to it so much and I love Elisabeth Moss but I just can’t finish it. It got so boring after a while. I will finish S1 at some point, but I can’t say I enjoyed it.

I don’t see why everybody think season 2 of Stranger Things will be a slump. Season 1 was very concise and knew what it needed to do. The season 2 trailer looked good.

The first season was concise enough that people are happy to leave the show as it is.

I think it is easily Westworld. The first season, while not mindblowingly good, was a contained story. A season 2 can’t have the same kinds of twists and turns as season 1 because they played their cards already. I really think Westworld should have just ended after season 1 and been a mini series

I guess This Is Us and Stranger Things are the most obvious.

I forgot to add Big Little Lies, which if gets another season and it probably will, it’s gonna be a mess.

I just thought the season was so consistently well-written, that I can’t believe that they would screw up. Look at Game of Thrones, the writers have moved past the books and the show is still doing great!
