It’s said that the actors rule the Academy. With that in mind, I collected the list of shows (Comedy, Drama and Limited) with nominations in 2 or more acting categories to see which shows were most popular with them.

Looking at this list, are there any shows that seem set to dominate the winners? I’m most curious about SNL potentially sweeping 4 of 4, but then, I equally can’t see Hugh Laurie losing Guest Actor to one of 3 nominees from SNL in a system that seems prone to vote-splitting. Can any show win all of its categories?

The other interesting question is the link between the number of acting nominations and the Series awards; every show that received the most nominations in its genre also received nominations in 4 acting categories, this year’s ‘maximum’ (except Feud). As such, is a show that over-performs in acting awards more likely to win Series if nominated, regardless of how the other categories are awarded (Key examples are This is Us and The Crown, which I currently consider likely to win 1 acting Emmy each)??

Here’s the list of shows, with the number of acting categories they received at least one nomination in:

    This is Us – 4

    Westworld – 4

    Saturday Night Live – 4

    Veep – 4

    Black-ish – 3

    The Handmaid’s Tale – 3

    House of Cards – 3

    Stranger Things – 3

    Big Little Lies – 3

    Feud – 3

    Fargo – 3

    The Americans – 3

    Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – 2

    Master of None – 2

    Baskets – 2

    Girls – 2

    Transparent – 2

    Better Call Saul – 2

    The Crown – 2

    Wizard of Lies – 2

    The Night Of – 2

    Ray Donovan – 2

How to Get Away with Murder – 2

Orange is the New Black – 2

    American Crime – 2

I think SNL has the best chances, with 2 winners. (Guest categories excluded)

Feud and Big Little Lies could do something similar. A real surprise would be Baskets.

What do you think of SNL’s chances in the Guest categories?

McCarthy is almost certain, but I doubt they’ll win in the male category, though Chappelle is a wild card for me.

I have Veep taking three acting prizes, for Louis-Dreyfus, Chlumsky and Laurie.

I think “This Is Us” will take lead actor in a drama and guest actor in a drama.

I have Alfred Molina for Supporting Actor and Laura Dern for Supporting Actress, so if Nicole Kidman wins that’s two for BLL and if Jessica Lange wins that’s two for F:B&J. Right now I’m leaning towards Kidman but I’m not sure.

Probably not This Is Us, I just can’t see Brown winning.

SNL probably will get 2 or 3

Veep can get 2 with JLD and Laurie

    BLL with Kidman and Skarsgård

I’m not predicting any for Fargo but Coon, McGregor, or Thewlis could all win.

It’s very unlikely but I’m convinced Kemper has the best chance of anyone to beat JLD and same with Burgess to beat Baldwin.

Transparent can do it, but again it’s unlikely, same with The Crown and Claire Foy.

    I have this feeling too!

I can’t think of any show since Angels in America that has won 4 acting categories (and again, it won Series too).

This year I think that it will be difficult for any show to get more than 2:

SNL would get the closest to sweeping, but realistically it will max out at 3, with 2 (McCarthy and one of Baldwin and McKinnon) being the most likely tally on the way to a win in Variety Sketch. Veep could also get 3 if it’s winning Series again; I could see Chlumsky benefiting from serious vote-splitting but can’t imagine either Hale or Walsh beating Baldwin, Anderson and Burgess. Just JLD and Laurie seems more likely.

I think that The Handmaid’s Tale, Feud, and BLL could win 3 but would have to also be winning Series. Likewise for Wizard of Lies, the Crown and the Night Of with their 2 categories.

If somehow This is Us and Westworld managed to win for more than 2 actors I think they’re winning Series.

Agreed that they seem very likely, do you think Dowd or Wiley could surprise?? If so I think handmaid’s tale is almost definitely winning series
