Peter Boyle. Clyde Bruckman was a fantastic character and it’s one of “The X-Files” most important episodes. Classic.

I agree! One of the best episodes of television I have ever seen and my favorite X-Files after “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space”

I went with Peter Boyle but Richard Kiley was superb in his two guest appearances on Picket Fences.

Lithgow was fine but Zach Gilford would have been my pick that year.

Guest-acting awards were initiated in 1986. They first started off without separating the genders. In 1989 the current system we recognize took effect. Winners among the gentlemen guesting in drama were:

 John Lithgow, Amazing Stories (NBC)
 Joe Spano, Midnight Caller (NBC)
 Patrick McGoohan, Columbo (ABC)
 David Opatoshu, Gabriel’s FIre (ABC)
suspended (guests in that year’s awards were combined with series lead and supporting players)
 Laurence Fishburne, Tribeca (Fox)
 Richard Kiley, Picket Fences (CBS)
 Paul Winfield, Picket Fences (CBS)
 Peter Boyle, The X-Files (Fox)
Pruitt Taylor Vince, Murder One (ABC)
 John Larroquette, The Practice (ABC)
 Edward Herrmann, The Practice (ABC)
 James Whitmore, The Practice (ABC)
 Michael Emerson, The Practice (ABC)
Charles S. Dutton, Without a Trace (CBS)
Charles S. Dutton, The Practice (ABC)
 William Shatner, The Practice (ABC)
 Ray Liotta, ER (NBC)
 Christian Clemeson, Boston Legal (ABC)
John Goodman, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC)
 Glynn Turman, In Treatment (HBO)
Michael J. Fox, Rescue Me (FX)
 John Lithgow, Dexter (Showtime)
 Paul McCrane, Harry’s Law (NBC)

I picked Boyle, but Lithgow was absolutely marvelous. Actually, if Larroquette had been on this list, I might’ve picked him… or Herrman. They made for some of my favorite arcs on “The Practice”.
