George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce are considered the greatest stand-up comedians of all time. However, they have unfortunately left us and departed to another life.
I would like to compile a list of the 10 greatest living comedians, and put that into a poll where us, the users of GoldDerby, can vote and decide a winner in the typical GoldDerby democratic system
So if you could list any amount of people you consider to be the greatest living comedian(s), it would be really helpful.
My list is:
- Jerry Seinfeld
- Bill Cosby
- Robin Williams
- Steve Martin
- Ellen DeGeneres
- Eddie Murphy
- Louis C.K.
- Denis Leary
- Whoopi Goldberg

It depends, in terms of legacy, Mel Brooks is still around. In terms of doing the best work right now, I’d say Louis C.K. for sure.
I personally believe Seinfeld is overrated. The episodes he wrote of the show are nowhere near among the best – Larry David was the true genius behind it all – and he was always the weakest on the emsemble. Even when he had great episodes where he got more to do in terms of performance, he always ended 4th on ranking them by season. Also, his stand-up is solid, but nothing special. certainly not comparable to legends like Lenny Bruce, Carlin and Pryor, and to living comedians such as Chris Rock and (again) Louis C.K.December 5, 2012 at 6:05 am #266456
I truly believe 30 years from now, if our planet hasn’t been desimated by nuclear holocaust that we will be saying Louis CK was one of if not the greatest Comedian to ever live. Shit, even if the planet has been destroyed we’ll still be saying it.December 5, 2012 at 6:11 am #266457

Says the person who thinks New Girl is the best comedy on TV. It is my opinion and you better learn to respect that.December 5, 2012 at 7:08 am #266460
Well, “Louie” and “Community” aren’t airing right now, and “Happy Endings” and “Parks & Rec” are so subpar this year. I don’t like “New Girl” but I can understand why he would say that. My favorite comedy by far airing right now is “Don’t Trust The B_ In Apartment 23”, and that one is even more polarizing (and I bet robbypop hates that one).
And I do think the snark was more because the idea that Chelsea Handler is one of the best comedians of all time is well, quite frankly, absurd. She’s a funny lady sometimes, I guess, but she hasn’t done that much to be considered like that.December 5, 2012 at 7:16 am #266461
The thread title is: greatest LIVING comedian. I never she said she’s one of the best of all time.December 5, 2012 at 7:38 am #266462
Living comedians include a bunch of people not working much right now though, including several of the all time best. Just saying.December 5, 2012 at 8:16 am #266463
New Girl is the best Comedy airing now imo too, it’s not the best comedy on tv, several others are ahead of it.December 5, 2012 at 8:17 am #266464
Alan Carr. He is British for all you Americans. I like Kristen Wiig too.December 5, 2012 at 8:32 am #266465

In the words of Patton Oswalt – I have to acknowledge your opinions and beliefs and reserve the right to tell you that is stupidest thing I have ever heard.December 5, 2012 at 8:34 am #266466

Never actually watched it. No specific reason, it just hasn’t happened.
