Tom O’Neill discussed adding a reality judge category in last night’s chat. If the category did exist who would you predict to be the 5 nominees and of course win the Emmy?

    1)Simon Cowell (the X Factor)
    2)Randy Jackson (Idol)
    3)Adam Levine (The Voice)
    4) Len Goodman (DWTS)
    5) Blake Shelton (the Voice)

    I’d nominate:

    1) Nicki Minaj, American Idol
    2) Simon Cowell, The X-Factor
    3) Ben Folds, The Sing-Off (assuming he’s on once it returns)
    4) Adam Levine, The Voice
    5) Blake Shelton, The Voice

In reality, Minaj would be swapped for someone from DWTS and Ben Folds for… Howard Stern/Howie Mandell or Nigel Lythgoe

Had this existed in previous years, Simon Cowell would’ve Jeff Probst-ed this one for American Idol.

I think the Emmys would go for judging teams to be more diplomatic. Like “the nominees for Outstanding Reality Judge are the judging teams of American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance?, Top Chef, and The Voice,” pretty much.

^ You’re right, that’s more likely. In that way, I’m sure The Voice would be tough to beat. Not only they are all big names, but they have great chemistry, they are the actual focus of the show instead of the actual contestants, and have forced all other reality shows to up their game in judge intereaction.

That said, I’m surprised people don’t think Levine would win if it was individually. Cowell could have won a few years ago, but Levine is clearly the most popular judge on any reality show right now. And don’t forget that Emmys rarely go to “mean” people. Cowell is too polarizing when compared to someone so energetic and funny like Levine or someone so emotionally involved with his contestants like Blake.

This is what I was thinking, too.  I don’t get why we don’t have this yet, in fact.  There are some reality competition shows where the judges do more than the hosts, so the judges should get their due, too.  Maybe that way some desrving judging panels (and shows) could get recognized like The Sing-Off (post-Nicole Scherzinger) or America’s Got Talent (let’s face it, Nick Cannon’s not getting that show an Emmy nod).  Or even that hot-ass mess that the America’s Next Top Model judging panel is (pick your season) could’ve gotten some love (would’ve been a nice swerve).

What about shows where the panel changes from one week to the next, like Iron Chef America?

Besides – there aren’t any other performing awards given to groups or ensembles; why would they create one just for reality-competition show judges?

OOPS – they wouldn’t; Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio were nominated as a team for Top Chef in 2009, so why not have the judges nominated by show?

The best option would be to leave it up to the show to decide how to submit. They could choose to have their judges submitted individually or in teams.

The best option would be to go back and include everybody in the Reality Series categories like they did when the reality category began.

After all, the Reality Host nominees have always been a part of the series nominees (right?) with the exception of Probst. The same people/shows over and over again. It’s not like this means they’re going to go for other nominees elsewhere, like the Ben Folds suggestion.

Instead of nominating both Shelton and Levine but not Aguilera, Shakira, Usher and Ceelo (all six would be elegible this year), everybody gets included like Atypical says, plus Carson Daly. And we eliminate the Host category too in the process.

But if not, and going with the suggestion of teams:
    1. The Voice
    2. Project Runway
    3. Dancing with the Stars
    4. American Idol (mostly because of Minaj)
    5. RuPaul’s Drag Race (yes, Michelle, RuPaul and sometimes Santino can be more fun and funny than any judge on tv).

I’d love RuPaul’s Drag Race to be nominated, but unfortunately, I don’t think it would. If hosts are included, like you said in your example, I’d expect So You Think You Can Dance to get in just because of Cat Deeley, so that would take Drad Race’s spot. Plus, I don’t think the voters in this category probably know this show exists, even though it’s one of the funniest and most entertaining on TV.

Last year Logo did their first ever campaign I think and pushed heavily (in their capacity) for RuPaul to be nominated. Of course it didn’t happen and I don’t think it ever will either. I don’t think that the voters “don’t know the show exists”, I just think they don’t consider it worthy because of the nature of the show. I was also a little biased because those are pretty much the only shows with judges I watch, I wouldn’t consider X Factor for anything else than a show that gives me a headache and reason to complain each week and I find the America’s Got Talent judges as annoying as the show itself.
