As an ensemble the entire cast shines, but after watching season 2, I’m going with “Other” specifically for the flawless performances by Samira Wiley as “Poussey”  and for the tour de force work done by veteran actress Lorraine Toussaint. Yes, her character could at times get hammy, but imho the woman is a master thespian! she is fantastic…

The “face” of the series is Uzo Aduba, but Crazy Eyes is just one heckuva scene stealing memorable character.

The overall best actress of the series is Kate Mulgrew.

The series-best performance is in season two by Lorraine Touissaint.

My personal favorite is Yael Stone.

The performance that makes me LOL the loudest is Taryn Manning in season one.

But the glue that holds the entire series together is Taylor Schilling

In other words, this is the best ensemble on television (with Veep right below it). Everyone has something to contribute while they all remain interesting and compelling characters.

Taylor Schilling. But Natasha Lyonne is very funny and underrated on the show.

Uzo Aduba is the best actress on this show,.when given material, not one of the other actress get even close to how she acts, a powerhouse performance, she should’ve given much more material, however, could be one of those cases where the actor is only good in small drops. I gotta agree that Touissaint stole the scene on this second season eventhough by the end her character got really tiresome.

If Aduba can win Guest Actress in a Comedy, it may be one of my most favorite Emmy wins ever.

She already has a win-worthy submission in season two for the finale (“We Have Manners. We’re Polite.”). A little bit dramatic, but definitely effective. Lorraine Toussaint should be in there with her, but I’m sure she’ll be submitted in Guest since she was listed as Guest, which is ironic since I think it was confirmed she was in the top five stars of having the most lines in season two. For her submission, I would go with the episode in which we’re introduced to Vee, “Looks Blue, Tastes Red.” It’s a sympathetic episode, has a complete arc, and even has a guest-feel to it (opposed to a series/season regular being in guest thanks to billing). But if Toussaint goes Supporting and gets in along with Aduba, I think she would be unbeatable, if both she and Aduba submit the above episodes. Literally that would expose voters the *minor spoilers* beginning of Vee’s arc in Toussaint’s ep and the end of her arc in Aduba’s ep. It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. But the two of them were the MVP’s of season two, with an honorary third mention to Yael Stone who made Morello such a great, compelling and four-dimensional character.

Tough question! Funnily enough (though not that surprising), its definitely NOT Schilling. Its hard when the show has so many good characters.

    – I say Aduba is one of them. I LOVE Prepon, who has not been used as much as they should, she deserves much better with what she´s done with Alex.

    – Lyonne and Stone have been consistently great, though they weren´t given the spotlight in season 2 as much as others.

    – I didn´t really get the love for Mulgrew when the first season came out, but during the second season I came to truly appreciate how great her performance actually is, and how she has managed to give so many layers to the character.

    – Extra points to Wiley for building her character throughout the second season. Brooks on the other hand, didn´t shine as much in season 2 as she did before…or maybe ots because I was dissapointed in her character´s manipulated decisions haha.

    – Manning, imo, was the breakout star of season 1, but in the second one I wasnñt that much interested in her anymore

For my personal awards, I nominated Schilling, Prepon, Aduba, Manning and Schrieber. I gave Manning the win over Aduba for season one, but Aduba easily wins for season two (although that’s a whole year away). I just loved Manning’s manic performance in season one. You never really hated her, but you knew you should. She was nuts and hysterical, and I thought Manning played it perfectly. The last scene (“Do you like my dress?!”) is one of the best moments in the show’s history.

I agree Aduba works in small doses and that’s how she has been presented so far. Manning made much more of an impact in the first season than Aduba, at least for me. That changes in season two, so it really depends on what season you want to analyze.

And while I only nominated those five actors, there are others I absolutely adore, namely Brooks and Lyonne. Veep and OITNB have a very tight race for the best ensemble on TV, period. I think I’d say OITNB ensemble season 1 < Veep ensemble season 3, but OITNB ensemble season 2 > Veep ensemble season 3. Does that make sense? The growth in the use and talent of the entire cast of OITNB in the second season is just jaw-dropping. The ensemble element really grew from season one to season two.

So it’s hard to say who is the real star of OITNB because the thing it has going for it, moreso than almost any show on television, is that it’s not a show that belongs to just one person or even a handful. The entire ensemble elevates the show. It sounds tacky, but everyone’s the star here.
