Let’s just review some of the insanely dumb category decisions so far this year:

    – Thandie Newton probably cost herself an Emmy (or at the least her best shot) by going Lead. She won in Supporting at critics choice and got nominated in Supporting at the Globes. And if she and Wood both get in, vote split anyways in a popular vote.

    – Mandy Moore probably cost herself a nomination by going lead. She got nominated in supporting at the Globes.

    – Winona Ryder who was up for Lead at Globes and got nominated for SAG has now gone down to supporting, probably ruining the shows best shot at a win (Millie Brown).

    – What better way for Michelle Pfeiffer’s comeback to start than with an Emmy win. The longer suffering wife role almost ALWAYS results in a supporting win regardless of screen time or category fraud. And supporting is wide open. Just ask Viola Davis and Alicia Vikander. So of course Pfeiffer is going lead which is a blood bath and is a fringe contender as a result.

Does anyone play to win on the TV side? The Emmys are like the Oscars now with a popular vote. Strategy and campaigns MATTER. So far, I think a lot of consultants should be fired.

I eel like there could be a better title for this thread but oh well.

I think Ryder SHOULD be supporting but strategically it’s stupid.

I can’t say the same for Newton though, that decision is stupid all aroung

Moore could submit in either category since she is the only category in both times and her story is the framework for the whole show, but there is a 99.999999999% chance she won’t get in for lead, while she will probobly get in for supporting.

Winona did the right thing with going supporting, if anything she increased her chances. MBB was never going to win with her 42 lines, and she won’t be nominated, so that is not stupid.

From sight unseen, I can’t be certain but I thought Michelle Pfeiffer is the lead of her movie so not making a category fraud there makes sense, there is still more than two months to go and if the consensus towards her role is that she is supporting I’m sure she’ll end up in supporting.

Thandie Newton’s team will come to their senses, I am sure and she’ll end up in Supporting, not costing herself the win and not costing Evan Rachel Wood the nomination.

Mandy Moore’s case is stupidity tho, I agree.

How do you guys feel about Sterling K. Brown switching to lead. I’m not sure if this decision is final, but Goldderby switched him from supporting to lead in the prediction center. I get that it Lithgow is the frontrunner in supporting, and there’s no clear frontrunner for lead. But I also feel he doesn’t have a chance to win in lead while he could realistically beat Lithgow in supporting

Thandie Newton is very smart to submit in Lead, since I am completely convinced Millie Bobby Brown is unbeatable for Stranger Things.

MBB-Ryder will be a true split situation if there ever was one. One is an industry veteran with much goodwill who doesn’t have as much passion for this role. The other is the true breakout star and postergirl of the show yet almost every professional actor will pause for a second before casting their ballots for a child. It really isn’t similar to what happened with OJ last year if anyone is gonna bring it up.

Tho, if Newton stays where she is, even in a split situation both can easily get more votes than the rest. Because who else? Who wants to see Aduba dying on stage again.

MBB got a SAG nomination! She is such a lock, the Emmys didn’t even nominate Uzo last year! You’re overthinking this, MBB is maybe the biggest lock of the night.

But so did Ryder. And they both lost!

Claire Foy is in LEAD at the Emmys, so MBB doesn’t have to worry about her. Look at Tatiana Maslany, Louie Anderson, Kate McKinnon, and even Ben Mendelsohn winning last year. You know what they all had in common? PASSION VOTING. It has totally taken over the Emmys, and that will show when Stranger Things practically sweeps, winning not only for MBB, but also I believe, for Best Drama Series.

Why do awards mean anything to any viewer?

    Because they’re fun?

I agree that ST  will win drama series. But in any category where vote splitting is a risk, there is not a lock. Newton was also nominated for the SAG. So she has as much of an advantage as MBB. She was also nominated for CC and GG. MBB was nominated for neither. I want MBB to win (actually I want Carly Chaikin to win but a man can dream) but it is not a lock. Newton is not confirmed in lead and she has passion votes as well. As does Metz, and Tierney, and even Chaikin if she gets in. Also all the OITNB lovers will vote for Aduba if  they snub it in drama series as a consolation prize. And Louis Anderson had a passion vote, but he had no cannabalistic conpetition from his own show. Sham with McKinnon, Maslany, and Mendlson. I do however, have a small glimmer of hope because Sterling K Brown was able to beat the name check of Travolta and Scwimmer. Ryder is a name check as well. However, I think the respected-actor-on-a-beloved-show-vote split between Travolta and Schwimmer causing Brown to win. If only one would have been nominated, the other would have won over Brown or split the votes enough for Laurie to win. Since Ryder is the only respected-actor-on-a-beloved-show-vote she could easily take votes from MBB.

Winona Ryder has no shot at a win, since as evidenced by those wins I mentioned last year, name checking isn’t nearly what it used to be. As for vote-splitting, that only happens if there are 2 very strong contenders, and nobody seems to be talking about Winona Ryder and her character with the degree of admiration and respect that MBB and her iconic character have received.

Remember how when Uzo Aduba won Comedy Guest Actress against not one, but TWO of her co-stars?! She played the most iconic, memorable, and unique character! Same with MBB on Stranger Things, who is even more of a lock when you consider her lack of competition from other shows, including OITNB with its downward trajectory in terms of Emmy noms and wins. I also find it a FAR more realistic scenario that MBB wins Drama Supporting Actress but the show in general loses Drama Series.
