I can’t go two feet into the official The Simpsons Facebook page without hearing all these people who really hate the show, saying that the plotlines are unoriginal, the guest stars are there for promotion and nothing else, the show has been on too long and needs to stop, or the most popular argument, the show hasn’t been good since Season 10.

I must ask, what the hell are they talking about? Because I watched a lot of post Season 11 episodes of The Simpsons and I think they are really good and funny. I’m just baffled, and even now with all the crap about their first guest of the new season, Lena Dunham, being a child molester and crap keeps coming up to add insult to injury on that whole Simpsons is crap argument. Man, I hate it. Why do people keep saying that?

Started going downhill even before S10 though.

Quality-wise, hasn’t deserved to be a regular show this century. Longform length seasons would be more deserving.

Generational resentment. The Simpsons have outlived our initial affection. For those of us who were there from the very beginning. Think when Michael Jackson died all of a sudden nostalgia took over where disappointment lived. When FXX ran a marathon of every Simpsons episode ever uncut and remastered many of us from the older generation become nostalgic again for The Simpsons. Not enough to care about the new seasons but enough to realize we don’t really hate the show we are bothered by its longevity where it feels like we are irrelevant to its survival. And that stings for many. I’m 32.

It’s just people up their own asses. They don’t even bother to watch the show and say this stuff. No show that’s been on for 26 seasons with the same cast that had some of the greatest episodes of TV history can keep churning masterpieces weekly but they are still doing good work. I think it is an honor to any actor to be asked to guest on the show. It’s an instatution now. It’s as much as a bucketlist item as hosting SNL. I do wish they steped up their game with the Treehouse of Horrors. Those should be given the most attention because most often than not those are the ones that grab the most viewers each season. They also are missing that freshness to current events and pop culture. They are just sticking to situational family scenerios. Other than that the show is still better than some of the overrated crap people call comedy these days (looking at Silicon Valley)

They do? In Portugal people seem to love it the same way I always remembered them to. I myself think it’s (alongside Bob’s Burgers) the best goddamn animated TV show in history.

I’m pretty sure the main problem is, the show is re-using plots.  Expect a lot of people to claim that “Orange is the New Yellow” is a rehash of Season 4’s “Marge in Chains.”

There are other problems – for example, a number of people don’t like the musical episodes, and there’s a strong “oh, no, not another Lisa Is Right Again, So Everybody Stop Eating Meat And Start Praying Only to ‘Lord Buddha’ episode” contingent – but I’m pretty sure “The Simpsons already did it” is the main problem.

I agree. The three S’s, as I call it, are the ones that everyone wants to guest star on and that you’d be a fool to say no to. The Simpsons, Saturday Night Live and Sesame Street

Obviously, a lot of people say that there’s too many episodes where Marge and Homer have problems with their marriage, to which showrunner Al Jean defended: “Have you ever been married?” (I haven’t, so I am taking his word for it).

People dont like the Simpsons? Lol. In the entire time I’ve met one person who hated the show because they “didnt like Bart”, and a handful who has no interest in “animated shows”.

Ok. The Bart hater is an idiot, and the others well, what can I say about that kind of close-mindedness? You dont have to care for The Simpsons, and a show which has run that long is bound to pick up some negative critics.

Not me though. I continue to adore it.  The entire family and their extended ones; especially Homer, and my spiritual twin, Lisa.

I’ve never liked the show because the material was always stupid to me. It wasn’t funny, it wasn’t clever. I didn’t like any of the characters nor did I care about them.

If that’s the case, don’t watch anymore adult animated sitcoms (like Family Guy, South Park, or Rick and Morty), because The Simpsons is the most tame and harmless of all the animated sitcoms today.

Look up Facebook comments on the official Simpsons Facebook page and then come back and see me.

But I agree. I love the series, always have, always will. Sure I dislike Bart, but there’s so many other characters to like that I think it’s easy to compensate. Completely agree with you!

As someone who is planning to do a dissertation on animated comedy for my Global Literature and Film course and perhaps even submit that for my Masters degree if it is good enough, I have to say I have watched The Simpsons since I was a tiny kid and have watched it religiously to this day. I have seen no problem with it, and haters are either just intolerant or blase, elitist jerks. No other way to say it.

Don’t worry Tyler, you’re on the winning time.

Couldn’t agree with you more Kyle. Everything you say, absolutely right

Yeah, its weird – it seems that the biggest haters of this show are in the USA. Around the world its so beloved

It is nearly unanimous that the “Golden Age” is one of the best stretches in the history of television. The Simpsons has long overstayed it’s welcome ($$$$$$).

Imagine if The Office continued for another 10 seasons? It would be the same thing, a once great series is now terrible.

Not sure if I would call The Office “great”…

I get what you mean though. The Simpsons making it this far is amazing to say the least.

Oh no, I like Family Guy and South Park. I just don’t like The Simpsons lol. It’s not the fact that it is “adult”, it’s just not funny to me.

IMO, one of the best things about The Simpsons is its random stupidity (I frequently joke the only rule in making a successful sitcom is to make it stupid). My Dad doesn’t like The Simpsons either, so your not alone (but my father is also an ultra-Christian and hates Family Guy and South Park with the burning passion of a thousand suns).
