Reportedly, John Oliver has offered to give his Emmy to Donald Trump should Trump lose the election in November. Yes, I realize that it’s almost certainly tongue in cheek, but if the Television Academy really wanted to, could it invoke its rules and take the Emmy back:
Rules for the Protection of the Emmy Statuette, paragraph 3 (from the 2015-16 Emmy Awards Rules):
“If a recipient or the recipient’s heir or successor in interest proposes to sell or otherwise dispose of the EMMY® statuette, such persons shall be obligated to return the statuette to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences which will retain the same in storage in memory of the recipient.”
Be careful, Tom O’Neil!!!
I believe the Academy realizes that it was a joke for television, not a serious offer to bet on the election. And Trump would never take the bet anyway, so it doesn’t really matter enough to the Academy.
