Will Julia Louis-Dreyfus finally win a Golden Globe after winning the Emmy four times in a row? There doesnt seem to be a huge newbie with a lot of buzz this year to beat her, so can she finally pull it off?

Tracey Ullman won Lead Actress in a Comedy/Musical in 1988 for “The Tracey Ullman Show.” I’m not sure if Globe rules have changed since then, but if they haven’t then Amy Schumer has this on lockdown. Considering the group of voters, I think the results will look like: 1) Amy Schumer, 2) Ellie Kemper, 3) JLD, 4) Lily Tomlin, 5) Jane Fonda.

I think mmmaybe JLD will squeeze in a Globe win somewhere, a la Bryan Cranston. Ironically enough, JLD is a Globe away from having all five television honors for that specific role. (She has one for “Seinfeld.”) Ty Burrell is in the same boat.

I hope not. She simply does not deserve it over many better and funnier performers. I respect the hell out of the Globes for not awarding her unfunny, forced, overrated performance.

I agree. The globes have actually gotten it right most of the time, awarding great performances such as Laura Dern, Amy Poehler, Mary-Louise Parker, etc, all of whom should have won Emmys. But I’m sure JLD will be fine with her 4 (rubberstamped) Emmys, lol. She doesn’t need a Globe.

Yes, it mostly depends on if Schumer is eligible or not.
    The rulebook says;”
    Television Series:
    1
. A recurring series with a total running time of at least 150 program minutes aired during the qualifying year.
2 The on-going theme, storyline or main characters must be presented under the same title and have contiunity of production supervision within the year and from year to year.”

Could they claim Schumer plays the same character in all of her skits? We’ll see. But this is Globes. So the rules are always interchangable.

But they can still give it to someone else even if she’s not eligible.
I mean, Amy Poehler didn’t not fit into your ”huge newbie with a lot off buz” criteria either but she won regardless.
They just dont like her (show). All the past nominees in Comedy Actress category in the last 5 years had been in a better position than JLD.
Nurse Jackie, The Big C, Orange Is the New Black, Enlightened, New Girl, Parks and Recration, 30 Rock, Glee, Jane the Virgin all have been nominated for Best Comedy Series. JLD on the other hand has been the sole nomination for Veep in the last 3 years. No nomination for the show. No nomination for other actors on the show. They are probably name-checking her to not to look too stupid but they couldn’t care less about Veep.

If they want to award newbies, they can still go with Taylor Schilling, Lily Tomlin or Jane Fonda, Ellie Kemper or even Constance Wu.

If Veep would be nominated for Best Comedy, I could give her an edge, but till then I don’t see her winning for this role ever.

Agreed. Cranston was nominated four times at the Golden Globes, winning once, and only two of those four nominations were concurrent with a series nomination for Breaking Bad.  I think in order for JLD to win the Globe she needs either a) a year with very weak freshman competition or b) Veep overall needs to break through in more categories.

This upcoming year may be the first opportunity for both of these criteria to align.  If Amy Schumer is not eligible in the Lead Actress category, there really aren’t any new, breakout actresses from the Fall crop of series like Gina Rodriguez last year or Lena Dunham for the first season of Girls.  Veep also just had its breakthrough season at the Emmy Awards, and Globes may play catch-up as they did with Breaking Bad and nominate it in at least Comedy Series. No, Veep has not penetrated the zeitgeist to the large extent that Breaking Bad had, but there are definitely parallels between the two trajectories of these series at award shows.

HFPA never liked Veep. Despite the show’s big victory at the Emmys, I can see they drop JLD this year, especially for her weakest season to date.

    Sounds like Jennifer Garbage Lawrence.

If they don’t actually watch the show the like we suspected I don’t think this would play a huge factor. Veep has made its best showcase at Emmys to date, so they would attract too much attention if they snubbed the show across the board.
The same is also true for Game of Thrones. They never liked it. It probably won’t win anything big until its final season but they don’t have the balls to snub it entirely, either.

And addition to these, I do think both Comedy and Drama side of TV right now is pretty weak enough to obstruct them to ignore the big winners from the Emmys.

I’m guessing that Julia Louis-Dreyfus doesn’t win unless/until “Veep” gets in for Comedy or Musical. Maybe that happens this year in light of its big Comedy Series Emmy win in order not to “look bad”? I think the win would need to happen and not just the nomination for Drefyus to prevail. This was “Veep”‘s weakest season to date, so more likely the Globes will go their own way again with something new or newish to honor instead.

I never knew Globes never nominated Veep for Series.

The only other HBO show they didn’t go for that the Emmys did was Flight of the Conchords, which was in a weird field of 7 including 3 other shows that only got that one nomination – Family Guy, HIMYM, Weeds.

While Globes nominated 5 HBO shows that Emmys didn’t – Enlightened, Rome, Extras, Newsroom, In Treatment.

^Thanks. I didn’t know this. It’s very strange indeed. They usually suck up everything that premium cables gave them.(Even Starz)
Not very keen on politics maybe? They were also quick to recognize Silicon Valley after its first season. So it can’t be something against HBO, lately

I would love for her to win, since it’d be a shame for the Globe to be the one thing she misses out on for this role. Realistically I don’t think she ever will.
