I realize they’ve been around a long time. But isn’t it time for them to split the supporting cateogries? It just seems fair, right? I know SAG doesn’t, either. But Globes already has a ton of categories. A few more won’t hurt….. right?

It is time for the Globes to split supporting into TV movie/miniseries, and TV comedy/drama series. I wouldn’t even mind the comedy and drama merging for the TV series category, but yeah I don’t think it would hurt too much to split them.

Also, SAG needs to get a hold of themselves and split the TV into lead and supporting.

The Globes already air 24 awards plus the DeMille. They aren’t going to expand to 28.

I agree @ dude93. It’s time, and SAG needs to get with the program, too!

What on earth does the air time have to do with the need for expansion? lol Even if they don’t air all of the categories on camera, the need is still there. Certain award shows always have categories that don’t air, due to air time, but are still essential.

The Globes do air all their categories though. And this isn’t a show that has a lot of fat that you can cut out a few. In order to (BARELY) get it in under three hours, they’d have to figure out some way to make it go faster in order to get 28 plus a tribute in on time. What do you displace if you add four? Song? Director?

They could cut out the ridiculous introductions & clips to the best picture nominees.

    A couple of options:

    – Ditch the hosts (but I kinda want Amy and Tina to host this show forever lol). The opening monologue alone could fit in 1-2 categories.

    – Let the show run over naturally to accommodate the new categories.

    – Extend the broadcast by 30 minutes.

    – Give out the new awards beforehand (pre-show) and announce them during commercial breaks.

That’s part and parcel why a lot of people in Hollywood kowtow to this charade (because let’s face it, a small cartel of journalists that has been known for being outright bribed in the past is a shady as it gets) of a show: the free publicity during Oscar season when these films are out. I think the larger reason why they won’t split those categories is because unlike you all, the HFPA knows it’s tv awards are a joke and don’t really care.

Another option would be to tell Jacqueline Bisset to hurry the f@ck up when walking to the stage.

But yes, in fairness, this is the group of people who nominated Sofia Vergara four years in a row, and have yet to nominate Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell. And it’s the group who didn’t nominate Veep for best comedy this year. I’m done. I’m so done.

Give Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar.

Maybe expand the nominees upto 6 but one category for TV Suppoting is fine by me. Otherwise they’ll just have filler nominees with no chance in hell of winning get nominated like what happens in the Emmys all the time. But on the other hand, they do leave out some really good ones to bigger names, so ya..

I don’t think they will split the supporting categories for television because this is the structure they have. It’s the same as the movie field. The leads are separated by genre and the supporting performers compete in the same category (so it’s supporting actor in a film and supporting actor on television).

My personal opinion is that I wouldn’t want them to separate them at this point because the categories have decades of history. I also like that they claim to recognize the best supporting actor and actress in all of television. It might not be perfect but it’s more fair than having a separate category for actors in movies/ miniseries and then combining performers in comedy and drama series in a single category.

Finally, I like these categories because they set the Golden Globes apart. Every awards show needs an identity and this is what makes the Globes unique. It would be dull if every organization had the same structure. So the Globes have the supporting categories, at the SAG Awards tv performers compete in the same category and the Emmys have the guest categories. Things are more interesting this way.

All they need to do is add 30 minutes to the broadcast and MAKE A F’ING ROW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM

Like most awards shows (not the Oscars), the Globes have a strict order from NBC to end at the 3-hour mark.

    This is for two reasons:

The West Coast repeats the show as soon as it finishes running live from 5:00 to 8:00 PT. If it runs over by even 1 minute, their repeat version is delayed (which is prime time for that zone).

Broadcast stations in the other time zones do not want their late local news delayed. That is their biggest money-making program.
