I just noticed that Claire Danes, Julianna Marguiles, and Michelle Dockery basically submitted a tape where they deal with the loss of their man. Danes watches Damian Lewis get hung as she helplessly can’t stop it, Julianna deals with the after math of Josh Charles death as she tries to piece together why he may have tried to get in touch with her, and Dockery mourns the loss of Matthew.
It is assumed based on tape it is between Danes and Marguiles. But I wonder if the similiarity betwen half the category may make a Caplan, Wright, or even Washington stand out. A similiar thing happened in the Daytime Emmy supporting actor race this year where 3 of the nominees dealt with a baby storyline and the winner was the one with an alcoholic storyline.
I think it might hurt Marguiles more than Danes as Danes has more layers in the plot than just mourning her guy. But it is something I am keeping an eye on as I try to settle on the winner.
Actually I’m predicting Caplan to win, I really think she could pull off a win like Jeff Daniels did last year and be the upset win of the night. I think her performance really stands out for being a character so different from the rest of the ones played by the other nominees. And yes, in part I think I’m predicting her because she’s not the suffering woman grieving for her loved one. I guess it comes down to the panel who ends up voting in this category, if they get tired of the “mourning woman storyline” I can see Caplan or even Wright winning this (yes, even Wright screwing up with her tape)
I still feel like its between Marguiles and Danes but if there is anyone that can take them down its Caplan this year. And I would be ok with that.
If Caplan won, it wouldn’t be an upset. It would be the Academy telling the viewer’s (especially The Gold Derby) to “zip your mouths, we DO watch the tapes and we vote on whom we want!”
Although I am all for a 3rd Claire Danes win, it would be a dream come true to see Kerry Washington or Michelle Dockery win.
