Edward Asner won a total of five Emmys for playing Lou Grant. He did that on the comedy side with “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and for the drama “Lou Grant.”
With “Orange is the New Black” making the move from comedy to drama, it means several of their actresses could also be nominated in both fields. Uzo Aduba could join Asner as a winner on both sides.
Are there any other people who have gotten nominations (or wins) in comedy and drama for playing the same role?
Joan Cusack as Sheila Jackson on Shameless
So, Joan Cusack and potentially the ‘Orange’ ladies. That’s the only ones in the history of the Emmys?
I would love for Aduba to achieve this feat. She is my personal winner for Supporting Actress if you wanted to place the show in Comedy or Drama. With the show going Drama, she does have a stronger shot at this record than she would have if the show stayed in Comedy. Fingers crossed she can do it!
I also cannot think of anyone else who has either won or been nominated for the same character in both drama and comedy categories.
It’s not the same thing, but Kiefer Sutherland was nominated as Jack Bauer for both Drama and Movie/Mini. But yeah, I can’t think of any other drama/comedy swaps.
Yeah Sutherland is not the same thing, if that were the case then Maggie Smith too. I forget who else was nominated for Downton as a Mini. I know McGovern, but she hasn’t been nominated since. Also, Laura Linney (who did the same as Sutherland).
Anyway, the thing about Aduba is that if the show successfully changes to Comedy next year, and it should, she could keep going back and forth. It would make the situation truly unique as Asner changed series, Aduba is in the same show.
