One of the most controversial Emmy wins (at least on these forums) of the past 20 years is when Edie Falco beat out her Sopranos co-star, Lorraine Bracco in 2001 for the shows third season. Bracco submitted Employee of the Month, where her character, Dr. Melfi, is sexually assaulted and spends the rest of the episode dealing with the moral dilemma of whether or not she should have her mobster patient, Tony Soprano, kill her rapist. It is widely considered to be Bracco’s best performance on the show, and many people believe that it is on par or even better than Edie Falco and James Gandolfini’s Emmy winning work in Whitecaps.

Bracco started out as a co-lead in the series, but as the show progressed her role developed more and more into a supporting role. By the third season, she could have easily passed in supporting (IMO). So I was wondering if she could have actually won if she submitted herself in supporting?

The Supporting Actress in a Drama Series winner that year was Allison Janney, and she submitted In the Shadow of Two Gunman Part 1 and Galileo.

I think she should have won with that episode, lead or supporting.

But I’m not sure she would have beaten Janney…those were The West Wing years and Janney was an istant Emmy favorite since the show started.

By they way I never saw Bracco as a lead in The Sopranos, not even in season 1.

She was one of the many women hurt at the Emmys by vategory confusion, switch placement like Rachel Griffiths in Six Feet Under, Chloe Sevigny in Big Love, January Jones in Mad Men and many others..

Much as I love Bracco – and believe she should’ve won that Emmy – no, I don’t think so. She didn’t have an especially strong second tape in Season 3 and Janney’s episodes were actually more potent than the tape Falco won with.

I actually think Bracco’s best chance of winning would’ve been going Supporting for Season 1. Maybe, just maybe she could’ve defeated Holland Taylor, who benefited from Nancy Marchand having messed up one of her tapes (she sent the pilot, which made little sense for her but actually would’ve been a good one for Bracco).

Oh yeah, that could have easily happened. Especially considering Bracco had the whole “film star doing TV”, which wasn’t as popular back then, in her favor.

I suppose she could have won. I love Falco’s winning tape, one of those rare “subtle” winning submissions that was entirely deserved. Falco is just a better actor than Bracco, and it’s pretty apparent based on just their submissions that year.

Bracco for me was never a co-lead. Falco always had more screen time, a better character and more complete arcs. Falco should have switched it up from lead to supporting for seasons 2 and 6b, but Bracco was always supporting, even in the early seasons.
