Who are your top six? Foreget about plausibility — the absolute six best performances you’d like to see nominated. Best Drama Supporting Actress is one of the toughest categories for me. In my personal rankings, I’d say pretty much anyone in my top 14 would be worthy of a win in most other years, but gun to my head, here are my six:

    1. Alison Wright, “The Americans”
    2. Regina King, “The Leftovers”
    3. Maura Tierney, “The Affair”
    4. Adelaide Clemens, “Rectify”
    5. Melissa McBride, “The Walking Dead”
    6. Constance Zimmer, “UnReal”

Gillian Anderson would have made my top 6 if she had submitted for “Hannibal.”

Among those other performances that would make my list almost any other year: Ann Dowd (“The Leftovers”), Caitlin FitzGerald (“Masters of Sex”), the “Game of Thrones” women (Williams, Turner, and Headey — in that order), Laura Carmichael (“Downton Abbey”) (remembering now that she entered the Emmys as a lead), Holly Taylor (“Americans”), and Jamie Clayton (“Sense8”).

Gillian Anderson didn’t submit for Hannibal? She would’ve been my FIRST choice even over Regina King. Hopefully she gets a nom for X Files (even though she was far weaker than in Hannibal).

    1. Regina King – The Leftovers
    2. Constance Zimmer – UnReal
    3. Jamie Clayton – Sense8
    4. Miranda Otto – Homeland
5/6/7. Maura Tierney – The Affair, Amy Brennaman – The Leftovers, Alison Wright – The Americans (any of these for the last two spots)

    1. Tuppence Middleton (Sense8)
    2. Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)
    3. Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley)
    4. Bellamy Young (Scandal)
    5. Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey)
    6. Darby Stanchfield (Scandal)
    7. Artemis Pebdani (Scandal)

My reasoning: Tuppence Middleton is my breakout star of the year and I grew increasingly impressed with her in Sense8 this year, culminating in a stunning, harrowing finale performance. Maggie Smith meanwhile is forever great on Downton and this year was no exception. She also deserves retribution for last year. Siobhan Finneran was brilliant and underrated in Happy Valley while Joanne Froggatt, whilst having a weaker season than the last 2, played her character’s pregnancy fears with aplomb this year. As for the Scandal women, to most reading this 3 women from this not particularly high brow show probably seems excessive, but for me the flaws in Scandal this season lay in the writing and it was the performances of these 3 three supporting women and Kerry Washington, who kept me interesting, particularly Bellamy Young who had a great season.

These are just pulled from the dream ballot, may update if I can think of any others that weren’t included as choices

Amen for the mention of Bellamy Young on Scandal. She deserves to be nominated and I think that she has the submission to win.

Clemens has been deserving for a couple of seasons now, she plays the role with total nuance and it just a very natural performance, it was very hard to choose between her ant Tierney who in my opinion, has the strongest tape of them all and had a very explosive season, Falco is in an oddball show but it is another great performance totally deserving of a nomination at least, Manning had a very strong arc last year despite of this last shit season for her character which might hurt her chances, Alison wright gives a powerhouse performance who should at least get nominated and for last, Seehorn would close my top 6 with a very strong arc this season eventhough she doesn’t have a winning tape.

    1. Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
    2. Laverne Cox, Orange Is The New Black
    3. Neve Campbell, House of Cards
    4. Dana Delany, Hand To God
    5. Kate Burton, Scandal
6.Taryn Manning, Orange Is The New Black

Christine Baranski is a fantastic actress whose work on TGW has netted her consecutive nominations each year of the show; but whose work has typically been to subdued to merit a win. Perhaps the impact of the slap heard around the world in the series finale will be enough to clinch her an overdue win and give her a bookend to her previous win as a comedy actress for “Cybill.” Laverne Cox’s performance was stoic, strong and haunting in a timely and compelling storyline. Dana Delany is simply a marvel to behold in any role she is in. Kate Burton is a fantastically compelling screen presence in any scene she has and is able to captivate your attention even with the smallest of scenes. Lastly, Taryn Manning has given perhaps the most consistent performance of this show while her character has grown the most of any. Her work this past season was tremendous if not understated in a storyline that while controversial produced fantastic acting from her.
