Theatre award season officially starts tomorrow with Three-Time Tony nominee (and SAG winner) Brian d’Arcy James and Disaster! star Jennifer Simard announcing the nominations for this year’s Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Unlike the Tonys, the Outer Critics Circle honors the best of both Broadway and off-Broadway. In other words, every musical on Broadway this season should feel so lucky they don’t have to compete with Hamilton at these awards since it already competed here last year.

I am disappointed that John by Annie Baker and its most outstanding player Georgia Engel were snubbed.

I am sad that Rachel Bay Jones wasn’t included for Dear Evan Hansen. Truth be told I haven’t seen it in NYC yet, but when it was in DC she was easily the best performer besides Ben Platt. Her performance really struck a nerve with me and I was hoping it would resonate with others up in the city, too.

@kylebailey Jeff Daniels was ineligible here since Blackbird appeared Off-Broadway years ago and was eligible then. They stated only “new elements” would be considered for nominations. Williams was not in the off-broadway incarnation but Daniels and most of the creative team were.

Unfortunately, I think this is a premonition of what’s to come for Jeff Daniels on nomination morning. The reviews for that production weren’t all-out raves, and the competition in Best Actor in a Play is rough, so I think he’s likely to be the 6th spot.
