So is the Distinguished Performance Award going to be a Bette Midler-Ben Platt face-off this year?April 5, 2017 at 7:10 am #1202056057
Bette Midler would certainly seem to be the frontrunner in that race. If I recall correctly, there is a cap of 2 actors nominated per show. With Dolly getting such a positive response all around, I wonder which of her co-stars will join her.
Other likely candidates for distinguished performance noms:
Ben Platt, “Dear Evan Hansen”
Laurie Metcalf, “A Doll’s House, Part 2”
Cate Blanchett, “The Present”
Gideon Glick, “Significant Other”
Jo Lampert, “Joan of Arc: Into the Fire”
Sutton Foster, “Sweet Charity”
Allison Janney, “Six Degrees of separation”
Michael Emerson, “Wakey, Wakey”
David Oyelowo, “Othello”
Josh Groban, “The Great Comet”
Stephanie J. Block, “Falsettos”
They also usually give out a special honor for an outstanding ensemble, and I’d be shocked if that didn’t go to “Come From Away” this year.April 5, 2017 at 8:23 am #1202056338
With Bette Midler receiving the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award, would that take her out of the running for the Distinguished Performance Award?April 5, 2017 at 5:26 pm #1202056871

I don’t think it takes her out of the running, but I think they’ll want to spread the wealth so it should be Ben Platt’s to lose.April 10, 2017 at 7:51 pm #1202062755
Patina Miller and Bebe Neuwirth will announce the Drama League nominations on Thursday, April 19. http://www.playbill.com/article/patina-miller-and-bebe-neuwirth-will-announce-the-drama-league-award-nominationsApril 17, 2017 at 6:57 am #1202068615
I noticed that Ben Platt and Dear Evan Hansen were nominated at last year’s Drama League Awards during its Off-Broadway run, and upon further research, I discovered that Hamilton was nominated during both its Off-Broadway and Broadway run. So are the Drama League Awards the only awards that allow programs to compete during both Broadway and Off-Broadway runs?April 17, 2017 at 7:00 am #1202068617
That’s right. The only way a performer cannot be nominated for the Broadway transfer is if they already won for the off-Broadway production.April 17, 2017 at 9:07 am #1202068731
Thanks for the clarification. But what about the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards? If Off-Broadway productions that were nominated at those awards transfer to Broadway, they cannot be nominated again, correct?April 17, 2017 at 9:10 am #1202068738
Audra McDonald and Will Swenson have been announced as the hosts of the Drama League Awards. http://www.playbill.com/article/audra-mcdonald-and-will-swenson-to-host-this-years-drama-league-awardsApril 17, 2017 at 9:11 am #1202068740
That’s correct. For example, Hamilton didn’t compete at the Outer Critics Circle nor Drama Desk Awards last year because it already did when it was off-Broadway the year before.April 17, 2017 at 9:45 am #1202068776
If any elements are different from the Off-Broadway production, like Josh Groban and Denee Benton in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812, are they eligible for nominations?April 17, 2017 at 9:53 am #1202068788
I think so. While Jeff Daniels wasn’t eligible last year for his performance in the Broadway production of Blackbird, Michelle Williams was since she wasn’t a part of the original off-Broadway incarnation.April 19, 2017 at 8:19 am #1202070769
