Christopher Sieber, Harriet Harris and Julie White will announce the nominations on April 18. The ceremony itself will take place May 18 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square at 11:30 A.M.

Do we just go ahead and give Distinguished Performance to Glenda Jackson and save everyone else the trouble?

If not her, who has the best chance of taking it? So far I’ve come up with Katrina Lenk and Andrew Garfield.

On paper, she does look like the obvious choice. After all, a performer can only win the award once, and never have to compete again. Even though she didn’t go on to win the Tony that year, Chita Rivera winning Distinguished Performance in 2015 for The Visit is a good example of this as she kind of won it as a lifetime achievement award given how she was 82 years old and still performing.

Kind of a slap in the face to Caissie Levy to pass over her in favor of Jelani Alladin for Frozen‘s second slot.

Lindsay Mendez was passed over in favor of Carousel‘s leads.

Were Mary Jane and Carrie Coon not eligible for some reason?

Just going over the list, I’m noticing a few notable omissions:

    – Caissie Levy from Frozen
    – Lindsay Mendez from Carousel
    – Denise Gough and Nathan Lane from Angels in America
    – Ethan Slater (and anyone for that matter, especially Gavin Lee) from Spongebob (even though it’s in Best Production)
    – Any of the supporting actors in The Band’s Visit

How much of a predictive body is the Drama League for Tony nominations/wins? Are there overlaps in voters, etc.?

Nathan Lane was not eligible because he has won the Distinguished Performance award before.

No Farinelli and the King for Play Production, either.

None of the precursors overlap with the Tonys, so it’s important to take everything the Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk says with a grain of salt. Here is the Drama League’s track record when it comes to predicting the Tonys…

Hahaha yeah I forgot about that. I just saw the article now and there’s an addendum at the bottom. Sorry.

I’m surprised Harry Potter himself, Jamie Parker, isn’t nominated.

The following performers have already won the Distinguished Performance Award, and thus cannot compete for it again. However, the Drama League is recognizing and applauding them for their work in the following:

Norbert Leo Butz-My Fair Lady and The Whirligig
Kathleen Chalfant-For Peter Pan On Her 70th Birthday
    Nathan Lane-Angels In America
John Lithgow-John Lithgow: Stories By Heart
    Bernadette Peters-Hello, Dolly!
    Mark Rylance-Farinelli And The King
