Was very lucky to get to see Queen Audra in concert this past Friday night. Her performing brilliance certainly carries into the concert format–she had an enraptured crowd in the palm of her hand from the moment she took the stage with her 3-man band. She was relaxed and gracious and extremely funny. She told stories about her teenage daughter, shared stories about her work with Covenant House for homeless teenagers, talked about doing The Sound of Music Live! and at one point launched into a passionate defense of Idina Menzel when she was talking about how difficult it is to sing live.
And boy, did she sing. She’s just a consummate actress with an impeccable instrument. It was a 100-minute show; highlights included:
“Maybe This Time”
“Stars and the Moon”
“Climb Ev’ry Mountain”
“It Might As Well Be Spring”
Plus a German lieder song set to the text from Craig’s List ads, which was too awesome to even describe.
I have 2 great seats for AUDRA at the Tilles center
at CW Post College May 9th..Ive seen her at Carnegie
Hall a few years ago..but the seats were up in the 4th
tier..At the Long island venue, I will be right up front orchestra
in the 5th row center..OMG cant wait….She is a treasure
and i expect brilliance and she always delivers..ive been
lucky to live in NY and see 7 of her shows so far…
CAROUSEL, RAGTIME, MASTER CLASS, 101 IN THE SHADE
RAISIN IN THE SUN, PORGY AND BESS AND LADY DAY..
I missed Marie Christine…she got a Tony nomination for all
Audra’s next Broadway project sounds interesting, and she’s certainly hooking up with first-rate collaborators:
She is most certainly a treasure!
I just moved here last year, but had seen her when traveling in Ragtime, Marie Christine, and 110 in the Shade….along with a concert appearance.
When I moved here, she still had a month left in Lady Day but we ended up not going because we really wanted to fit in Pippin and Gentleman’s Guide and we couldn’t afford to spend too much but looking back, I regret not budgeting it in to see her in that particular show.
I would love to see her live again so it looks like next Spring will be that chance!
