In 2008, the American Theatre Wing introduced two new Tony Awards for Sound Design. Since 2014, both of those categories have been removed.

A recent article on Broadway World interviewed two veteran sound designers…
    http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/BWW-Interview-Listen-Up-To-Broadway-Sound-Designers-Fitz-Patton-and-John-Shivers-20160817

It all had me thinking if the Sound categories had still been in existence, what do you think would’ve been nominated (and won)?

Here’s what I think the sound categories would’ve looked like had they still been in existence these past two years…

    2015
Best Sound Design of a Musical:
    Kai Harada-Fun Home
    Kai Harada-On the Town
    Scott Lehrer-The King & I
    Jon Weston-An American in Paris

Best Sound Design of a Play:
    Paul Arditti-Skylight
Ian Dickinson-The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
    Nick Powell-Wolf Hall, Parts I & II
Jon Weston-You Can’t Take It With You

    2016
Best Sound Design of a Musical:
    Steve Canyon Kennedy-On Your Feet!
    Scott Lehrer-Shuffle Along…
    Dan Moses Schreier-American Psycho
    Nevin Steinberg-Hamilton

Best Sound Design of a Play:
    Broken Chord-Eclipsed
Tom Gibbons-Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge
Clive Goodwin-Long Day’s Journey Into Night
    Fitz Patton-The Humans

    What do you think?

For 2015, I think The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time and Fun Home would have won. For 2016 I think The Humans and Hamilton would have won.

If Best Sound Design was still around, I bet The Encounter would win Sound Design Of A Play in a landslide.

No way Shuffle Along would have made it in last year over Spring Awakening and American Psycho. I really wish the category was still around so that The Humans could have picked up that award. The sound design was an integral part of the story and was a huge reason why the end was so terrifying and unnerving.

Those two definitely seem like good possibilities. Though I think considering how well Shuffle Along… did with the nominators, Sound Design probably would’ve gotten on the ticket. I guess among my four possibilities, ether On Your Feet! or School of Rock probably would’ve gotten left out to put American Psycho and/or Spring Awakening in.

It was just announced today that the sound categories will be reinstated next year…http://www.broadway.com/buzz/188370/tony-awards-to-reinstate-sound-design-category-in-2018/

If the categories were to be in existence this year, what do you think would’ve been nominated (and won)?

    Here are my guesses…

Best Sound Design of a Musical:
    Scott Lehrer-Hello, Dolly!
Nicholas Pope-Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812
    Mick Potter-Miss Saigon
    Nevin Steinberg-Dear Evan Hansen

Best Sound Design of a Play:
Gareth Fry & Pete Malkin-The Encounter
    Matt Hubbs-Indecent
    Fitz Patton-The Little Foxes
Peter John Still & Marc Salzberg-Oslo

I’m sorry, but if they don’t give “The Encounter” a special Tony to make up for this….so help me. Glad they realized it was foolish to nix the category in the first place. “The Encounter” and “The Great Comet” would definitely be the two winners this year. I wish they would have reinstated the categories sooner.

The Encounter absolutely deserves a special award.

From all that I’ve heard, it sounds like it’s very well-deserved.

There is a God! So incredibly deserving and so glad the committee realized how ridiculous it would be to overlook them just to bring back their category next year.
