My third and final play I saw was Blackbird…Two person play starring Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams about child abuse…A wild ride with these wonderful actors.
I hope both actors get Tony Nominations
Were you there last night? I was there!
In a on the fly trip to NYC for a job interview (that did not go well), I decided to go see Blackbird to make my trip worth it. It was definitely worth it. Jeff Daniels is one of my favorite actors and continues to impress me with his dramatic work after 3 home runs with The Newsroom, his supporting role in Looper, and Steve Jobs (also worth noting he was the best performance in The Martian though not an actor’s movie). Both Daniels and Williams give emotionally raw and draining performances that definitely take them over as Daniels was very out of it at the stage door. Michelle Williams continues to do her excellent work even reminding me of a young Ellen Burstyn in this performance. She really hits it out of the part towards the end with a very long monologue and a powerful stand off with Daniels. I really liked the set as simplistic as it was but very nicely detailed. My biggest issue was the staging. I bought a ticket at the place under the steps in Time Square so I really didn’t have a huge choice of where to sit but I was towards the end on the right side and most of the show I was watching Daniels’ back to the point that I couldn’t hear many of his lines. I also couldn’t see some of the set where the vending machine was but it isn’t really used so it wasn’t a huge deal. Overall, powerful show and short and to the point. Daniels and especially Williams should be sure fire nominees. Not sure if the overall show will get Revival but it would deserve it if it did. Very exciting that this was my first play I’ve ever seen on Broadway!
I’m glad you love this show…I was there last week. I went to the box office in the morning and got orchestra seating(Rush) at a good price.
I met both Jeff and Michelle(so sweet)…They both deserve Tony Nominations
