Last night I saw a production of the Hedwig and the Angry Inch tour in Boston. It was a fabulous performance by Tony Nominee Euan Morton. I could see how NPH won a Tony for Lead Actor. One thing that baffled me was how and why did Lena Hall get nominated and win? I am wondering was it a weak year or was there that much love for the production? At least in the performance I saw, that role, had one full song and otherwise, just a back up singer. The other nominees were:
Linda Emond, Cabaret
Anika Larsen, Beautiful
Adriane Lenox, After Midnight
Lauren Worsham, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
It might have been because of the love for that production. I saw the tour back in January, and I will admit that while the character of Yitzhak didn’t have as much stage time to himself, I thought that Hannah Corneau still stood out in the character’s big moments.
Plus, there have been times where Tony voters might’ve found a pair/team so inseparable, that they couldn’t award one without the other.
Stephen Dillane & Jennifer Ehle in The Real Thing
Brian Dennehy & Vanessa Redgrave in Long Day’s Journey Into Night
Marissa Jaret Winokur, Harvey Fierstein, & Dick Latessa in Hairspray
Christine Ebersole & Mary Louise Wilson in Grey Gardens
Patti LuPone, Boyd Gaines, & Lara Benanti in Gypsy
Denzel Washington & Viola Davis in Fences
Michael McGrath & Judy Kaye in Nice Work If You Can Get It
Reed Birney & Jayne Houdyshell in The Humans
How was Lisa O’Hare NOT nominated for Gentleman’s Guide? She could’ve won that category.
Playbill just published an article about Tony-winning pairs for Lead…
I saw Hedwig with Darren Criss and Rebecca Naomi Jones and yes it’s not one that would jump out as a Tony winning performance but I think from what you listen to the cast recording with The Long Grift and Midnight Radio especially the powerhouse singer Lena Hall is. Sure the Tony might not be for who’s the best singer but I think her voice is too powerful to ignore. But besides being a powerhouse voice I think she put alot of emotion and heart/heartbreak in those songs. And though at the Tonys it isn’t called Best Supporting Actress but it is equivalent, she really is an amazing support to all the Hedwigs.
