A Tony winner and instant theatre legend for originating the role Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, Idina Menzel will star in the new musical If/Then next spring. It reunites the creative team behind Next to Normal, which won Tonys for its score and star Alice Ripley.March 1, 2013 at 9:02 am #431575
It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out for her. I know a lot of people who are passionate in Theatre who found out this news and kind of just rolled their eyes.
I do have high respect for Idina. A former dance teacher of mine was in the original Off-Broadway production of The WIld Party as one of the brothers and he always talked about how amazing she was in terms of her work ethic and professionalism…and while I feel that her best work is in smaller shows like The Wild Party or See What I Wanna See, I have a feeling this could be good for her and I am hoping the music is very well suited for her as Wicked seemed to take its toll on her after a while.
Maybe it could be a 2nd Tony for her (although I feel Tonya Pinkins should have beat her in ’04).March 1, 2013 at 1:26 pm #431576
I expected that Menzel would move on to film to capitalize on her internet popularlity and newfound fame after Wicked. Possibly even win an Oscar.
But this is great news. If the N2N team give her a role that’s anything similar to Ripley’s, she has that second Tony locked up.
Still waiting for the N2N movie!March 1, 2013 at 6:05 pm #431577
About time!!! Anyone else wondered why Menzel’s career didn’t take off in the way Chenoweth’s did after Wicked? They are both very different performers, but equally as talented in my eyes. Hope this project takes Menzel to amazing new heights!July 29, 2013 at 11:17 am #431579
It has been announced that Tony winner LaChanze (The Color Purple) has joined the cast of If/Then.
I’m seeing this in December during its pre-Broadway run in DC.August 1, 2013 at 12:51 pm #431580
Anthony Rapp has also been confirmed for the cast. So, it will be old home week for some Rent alums.January 5, 2015 at 3:04 am #431581

Producers announced that If/Then will close on March 22, when Idina’s contract is up. At that point, it will have run 401 regular performances but will close at a substantial loss.
