So the new jukebox/bio-musical about Gloria & Emilio Estefan opened last night to some pretty solid critical reviews…

It seems to me that the show will probably join Hamilton as a Best Musical nominee next year. As we’ve seen in the past, Tony nominators do tend to enjoy these kind of shows (Jersey Boys, Beautiful, etc.)

It also seems that newcomer Ana Villafane (who plays Gloria) could potentially be our first contender for Leading Actress in a Musical. She does have some major competition coming later in the season from previous winners (Laura Benanti, Audra McDonald, Jessie Mueller) to other newcomers (Carmen Cusack, Cynthia Erivo).

So what nominations do you guys think On Your Feet! could potentially get come Tony time?

Andrea Burns and Alma Cuervo got very good notices, so they could be in the mix for Featured Actress-though surely both wouldn’t get in. Villafane probably has a shot. The production design and the choreography also had their fans. The show seems to be selling well, so if they market it smartly and build word of mouth through the holidays, it could land a few noms come May.

I actually saw the show a couple of days ago and I’ve got to say that, even though I was pretty skeptical about this project, I ended up having a great time. It’s far from perfect, but I think they were able to find a way to make their strongest qualities shine. The direction, even if not particularly brilliant, is competent and the choreography complements very well Estefan’s music. Speaking of the music, It’s defenitely one of the high points of this and is presented by the great set of musicians. Now, Gloria and the producers did a great job casting this show! So much so that, even though the book is too by-the-numbers and sort of bland, I ended up 100% behind this characters and their story mostly because of how charismatic most of the actors were, especially the two leads! Josh Segarra has a weak singing voice but the guy certainly makes up for it infusing great presence into the Emilio character, and Ana is a GREAT Gloria… the girl is BRINGING it on stage and would definitely get behind a nomination for her!

For now, I think their chances are still “in the air” with so much yeat to open, but if they continue doing strong bussiness as they are, I wouldn’t be surprised to see then getting some good nods.
