What about Best Book and Best Score Tom? Do you think Gentleman wil get both? Or does Bridges have a good shot for best score?
Yeah I would have liked to hear Musto’s thoughts on score, book, and orchestrations.
I think Gentleman’s Guide is a lock for Book.
Bridges could very well take Score though. JRB has won best score for a shorter run (Parade closed in February the season it was eligible. Bridges of Madison County is actually his longest run on Broadway).
And as for orchestrations, its hard to get a sense of what the voters go for. Its a very new category so theres really not enough data or precedent to make confident predictions.
I think it took Michael Reidel a lot of nerve (no surprise) for him to say that JRB will have won both of his Score Tonys (assuming he wins for BRIDGES) by default. I can understand why it may be seen that way for PARADE but his score for that was absolutely stunning and would deserve to win in several other years…..and while BRIDGES has major flaws (particularly Hunter Foster’s songs and then a couple of the ensemble songs…and not to mention some very flowerly lyrics), it has some stellar music.
This is one of those instances where I kind of wish Music & Lyrics could be split because I’d give Music to JRB and then Lyrics to Lutwak & Freedman.
