Since there is a page for Lead Actress in a Play I guess it’s fine to start a thread for Lead Actress in a Musical. Here are those eligible with me questioning if Courtney Reed (Aladdin), Marin Mazzie (Bullets Over Broadway) and Margo Seibert (Rocky) are lead so until further notice I’ll place them in lead:

Mary Bridget Davies, A Night with Janis Joplin
    Sutton Foster, Violet
    Marin Mazie, Bullets Over Broadway
    Idina Mensel, If/Then
    Jessie Mueller, Beautiful
Kelli O’Hara, The Bridges of Madison County
    Courtney Reed, Aladdin
    Krysta Rodriguez, First Date
    Margo Seibert, Rocky
    Michelle Williams, Cabaret

I would imagine they’ll put Courtney Reed in featured too… No way in hell she’d make the line up this year with the likes of Broadway powerhouses Foster, Menzel, O’Hara, newcomer Mueller, and potential Williams…

    My shortlist would be:
Kelli O’Hara (may win with overdue factor and big juicy, dramatic, rangey role…)
Idina Menzel (could win her second… been ten years since her first Tony… a Next to Normal-esque role)
Sutton Foster (she won for a mediocre performance in Anything Goes, so anything could happen)
Michelle Williams (Natasha Richardson won the Tony for her Sally Bowles in ’98, and if Williams pulls it out of the bag, we could see another Tony-winning Sally… award-magnet role)
Jessie Mueller (could win for her first leading role on Broadway)

    Currently I’m going with:

    My shortlist would be:
Mary Bridget Davies, A Night With Janis Joplin (There always seems to be a newcomer and she would be it)
Sutton Foster, Violet (A two time winner who deserved both wins and is beloved by the broadway community)
Idina Menzel, If/Then (Ancipated musical with Menzel who is a tony winner who has a lot of buzz and plus the oscar performance will help her musical be watched)
Jessica Mueller, Beautiful: A Carole King Musical (If the tonys were now she would be winning but since more shows will open she will not win even though she is great plus having being tony nominated before she is not unknown)
Kelli O’Hara, The Bridges of Madison County (O’Hara has been nominated for everyone of her shows since 2005 and reviews say she is great again)

At this moment I think Menzel is winning but I could see O’Hara upsetting on her fifth nomination.

Guessing at this point, but I think the nominees will be:

    Sutton Foster, Violet
    Marin Mazzie, Bullets Over Broadway
    Idina Menzel, If/Then
Jessie Mueller, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Kelli O’Hara, The Bridges Of Madison County

with the possibility of Margo Seibert being placed in the Lead rather than Featured category….

I think it’s O’Hara vs Menzel, but if Cabaret plays well, why not Williams? lol

I have a strong feeling Marin Mazzie will get put in lead. There’s too many opportunites for BULLETS to land other featured actress nominations (Wolfe, Ziemba, Yorke), and Marin will be formidable in lead anyway. Also, I’m nervous about Idina. I’m thinking she might have to struggle for a nomination, let alone a win. I have faith in Michelle Williams in CABARET, but only until I don’t anymore haha. Jessie Mueller shouldn’t be underestimated, either.

    Marin Mazzie, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY
    Jessie Mueller, BEAUTIFUL
    Sutton Foster, VIOLET
Kelli O’Hara, BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
    Michelle Williams, CABARET

What makes you doubt her nomination. The show is currently in previews and from those who have seen it praise her. Menzel (Adele Dazeem) could easily win however O’Hara is overdue and easily win her first.

Just a gut feeling. I don’t think BRIDGES… will last much longer, so I’m not sure Kelli will be able to win come June. I could see IF/THEN opening to mxied reviews somehow. Mostly, I’m going off of how it seems on paper.

Bridges sales have been down, so its survival of the march/april onslaught is not guaranteed. True. And Ive heard some people have a difficult time following the plot of If/Then. But the Tonys frequently reward actors they love, even if they are stuck in a less than stellar show. Carolee Carmello (Scandalous), Valesia LeKae (Motown), Jessie Mueller (On a Clear Day..), Sutton Foster (Little Women) are just a few of many examples. So even if the shows close or get mixed reviews, the Tonys generally do a good job of separating individual aspects from the whole.

After a half-dozen or so previews of If/Then, all the buzz on Idina is very positive. With her recent notoriety, the sheer size of the role and the opportunities it offers, there’s no way she doesn’t get in. Even if the show gets mixed notices, as it likely will.

I would love to see O’Hara pick up her first Tony this June, but I’m beginning to think she’s becoming the Amy Poehler of Broadway. She deserved her featured actress win way back in 2005 for The Light in the Piazza, and she’s been unfortunate ever since then, being nominated against bigger juggernaut performances every year she’s included…

2005: should have won for Piazza
2006: too light a role (Pajama Game)
2008: no one was gonna beat Patti
2012: too light a role, and plus no one was gonna beat Audra or Jan Maxwell…

Her role in Bridges… is meaty and emotional, and she has some good material but I fear her buzz will have run out by the time June comes round. Idina Menzel’s buzz will continue to roll I’m sure, and I would definitely not count out Michelle Williams who is playing an award-magnet role… And then there’s good ol’ Sutton Foster who will be opening later, and so she may be in voters’ heads as a worthy winner if nominated.

I agree she should have won for Piazza. It should also have won Best Musical. I didn’t get the love for Spamalot, which to me was a misfire.
