I’d like to know WHY in the predictions section for the Tony Awards we can only predict 4 categories (Play, Musical…..). Where are the other ones? Director, Actor, Actress….
Seriously, are you going to add them?April 6, 2014 at 9:54 am #432731
In previous years they have added the four lead acting categories. But Beachum said in his post they are waiting for official category placement from the committee. But that announcement wont happen until the 25th. So unfortunately, if they go that route we’ll only have a couple days to put predictions in for the actors. Unless they change things this year, we wont get to predict nominees for all the categories. sad face.April 6, 2014 at 2:14 pm #432732
That sucks.April 7, 2014 at 1:15 pm #432733
yeah. I think most of those in charge are LA based, and therefore the Tonys never get enough coverage. Ive told Tom and Chris about the list I made in the “2013-2014 Season” thread, hoping that if I compiled everything for them we could get more up in the prediction center, but they dont even have all the eligible shows in there. Machinal is missing for instance. We’ll have to settle for predictions in the boards i guess. I hope they at least add music and lyrics this year.April 9, 2014 at 6:51 am #432734
There is also the issue of the time crunch. Now that GD is covering reality shows….don’t even get me started with that crap…there is only so much that the editors can handle.April 9, 2014 at 9:22 am #432735
ugh god. enough with the reality shows! Its sad when American Idol gets more attention on an awards site than the Tonys, one of the “big four” awards of the year.April 9, 2014 at 9:24 am #432736
Just a few updates that should be made to the Prediction Center:
Revival of a Musical
1) Cabaret will most likely be deemed ineligble in this category, since it is the exact same mounting as the last revival. All actors (except Alan Cumming) will most likely be allowed to compete.
2) Lady Day will most likely be consider a Play Revival, as it is a “play with music” rather than a Musical.
*Note: These rulings are not official yet, but having these two shows listed in the category will skew our prediction data significantly…

Ive tried twice to get them to add Lady Day (and Machinal) to the play revival category. The first time nothing happened, the second time they added Lady Day…to best musical. I then told them it was a revival of a play so they switched it…to revival of a musical. Obviously the ruling wont be offically known for about 2 more weeks, but it seems there is a definite push for it in the Revival of a Play category.
Previous re-mountings have been allowed to compete for the Revival race (ie: A Chorus Line). Although I cant think of a past remounting that has drawn ill will from certain people in the community like Cabaret has. I for one, didnt get to see Alan last time, so Im excited to be able to catch him now (and its one of my favorite musicals). But, there will be many people who wont vote for the production b/c they see it as a money grab by Roundaout. As a non-profit, many look to a company like them to try new things and be bold, but their reality is theyve been financially constrained for several years.
…of course the real question for me is why so many people have Cabaret in their number 1 slot. Even if its allowed to compete and is nominated: why on earth would they give the same production yet another Tony?
