To those of you that don’t know, Miss Zellweger is my top favorite actress. No, she isn’t the best of the best (a la Streep, Blanchett, Cotillard, Winslet), but her performances always move me and I support each and every one of her films.
Her career is dead in the water and she needs this. Hopefully it’ll result in a Tony win.
Director also working on a stage play of ‘The Hustler.’
While Gavin O’ Connor’s ‘Warrior’ failed to strike gold at the box office, the mixed martial arts drama starring Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy did receive glowing reviews and deservedly so. Now the director may have found his follow-up, ‘The Samurai,’ a “brutal lightning fast thriller.”
Penned by O’ Connor and Michael J. Wilson, the action centers on a rogue assassin named Townes Joyce, who breaks out of a Texas jail that puts him on the run from an international manhunt. Along the way, he gets involved with a woman and her child, and they go along for a ride that spans Costa Rica, Colombia, Paris and back to the U.S.
The two sold the spec script to Warner Bros. on Friday in a high six figure deal with aims for O’ Connor to helm the thriller as his next. The intention is to get it into production as soon as possible.
O’Connor is also reteaming with ‘Warrior’ co-writer Anthony Tambackis for a stage play adaptation of ‘The Hustler,’ the Walter Tevis novel that inspired the 1961 classic that starred Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason. Deadline adds that O’Connor is eyeing a Broadway bow and that he has received a commitment from Renee Zellweger to star.
