Apparently, the grosses for Shuffle Along… post Audra McDonald’s departure haven’t been great…
Although they’ve been very gentlemanly in their phrasing, the underlying message is “It’s all Audra’s fault!” and I hate that for her. Let’s face it, if the show were better, then it could survive a star’s absence for a few months, especially during the summer season.
This is a shame. I can’t stop watching Broadway Blues on the Tonys and kind of just want to go to see that choreography and Audra of course. A shame that they are going to give up. I just hope they record a cast recording
I was luckily able to see the show just the night before the Tonys. Audra was outsick, but her understudy was not only great, but she sounded a lot like her. I also thought Savion Glover had a great shot of winning the Tony for Best Choreography, but he lost to Andy Blankenbuehler for Hamilton. I’m sure the producers were hoping Glover would win so that they would’ve capitalize on it when he was suppose to go into the show.
