With the revival of John Guare’s SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION in previews, I’m wondering of any Goldderby readers have had a chance to see it. If so, what were your thoughts?
Its a beautiful production. I expect it to be competitive for a few design awards. Gorgeous set, done all in a bold deep red, is eye popping. With lots of angels, like an abstract painting. Id also say its the current frontrunner for Lighting Design in a Play, as I loved the use of light throughout.
Cullman keeps the action zipping along and the cast is uniformly great. I always adore John Benjamin Hickey and loved his take on the character. I thought Corey Hawkins really stood out. It is likely impossible for Janney to NOT be entertaining. She’s wonderful. The only quibble is that the ending currently feels a bit unjustified. Don’t want to spoil anything for those unfamiliar with the play. But if Cullman can tighten up and make clearer the end arc for Ouisa with Janney, and make better sense of the final image, they will probably win Revival.
Are all three actors locks for Tony nominations? I want to make sure my predictions are accurate.
Janney is most likely for a nomination. With the men, its hard b/c I think Lead Actor – Play is extremely competitive. Hickey is wonderful, though I’m not sure if the role itself offers him enough for a nomination in such a crowded season. Hawkins has the showier role, but is not a “familiar name” to Tony voters. (And keep in mind its still in early previews, so there is plenty of time for things to change). The play categories are all stacked so i have trouble using the term “locked” for anyone
Now that it’s officially open, here’s what the critics have to say…
