Each year the Theatre World Awards bewtow honors for outstanding debut performances in Broadway or Off-Broadway shows.Who do we think takes them home this year?

In general, about 10-12 recipients are chosen, as well as the Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence.  While Off-Broadway is harder to track in terms of who is making a debut, the majority of the list is chosen from Broadway performers. Below are all the possibilities I could think of:

    Katie Boeck, Spring Awakening

    Alex Boniello, Spring Awakening

    Danielle Brooks, The Color Purple

    Carmen Cusack, Bright Star

    Daniel N. Durant, Spring Awakening

    Cynthia Erivo, The Color Purple

Phoebe Fox, A View From the Bridge

    Sandra Mae Frank, Spring Awakening

    Kimiko Glenn, Waitress

Michael Gould, A View From the Bridge

    Richard Goulding, King Charles III

    Jennifer Hudson, The Color Purple

    Zainab Jah, Eclipsed

    Jenny Jules, The Crucible

    Margot Leicester, King Charles III

    Sarah Charles Lewis, Tuck Everlasting

    Camryn Manheim, Spring Awakening

    Marlee Matlin, Spring Awakening

    Austin P. McKenzie, Spring Awakening

    Drew Moerlin, American Psycho

    Lupita Nyong’o, Eclipsed

    Saoirse Ronan, The Crucible

    Tafline, Steen, King Charles III

Mark Strong, A View From the Bridge

    Ana Villafane, On Your Feet!

Nicola Walker, A View From the Bridge

    Ben Whishahw, The Crucible

    Lydia Wilson, King Charles III

Michael Zegen, A View From the Bridge

My guesses as to the winners:
Mark Strong, Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson, Lupita Nyong’o, Ana Villafane, Ben Whishaw, Carmen Cusack, Saoirse Ronan, Zainab Jah, Austin P. McKenzie, Drew Moerlin, Nicola Walker

    Thoughts?

    Camryn Manheim, Spring Awakening

    Thoughts?

Manheim won an Obie about 20 years ago. Doesn’t that make her ineligible for the award?

She has never appeared on Broadway before Spring Awakening. If memory serves, there have been recipients of the theatre world award who had appeared off broadway but we’re making their Broadway debut. I could be wrong, but I believe she would still be eligible.

In any case, if they go with someone from Spring Awakening (which I’m sure they will since there are so many debuts) there are other actors who will likely be cited before her.

    Sarah Charles Lewis, Tuck Everlasting
    Austin P. McKenzie, Spring Awakening
    Lupita Nyong’o, Eclipsed
