With the Tony Awards coming up this Sunday, I’ve been thinking about starting this topic.

During a recent Tony predictions video, Paul Sheehan mentioned that there always ends up being at least one surprise every year. While we won’t know what’ll potentially surprise us this year until Sunday night, I’m curious to hear from you guys. What was the biggest surprise you’ve ever encountered at the Tonys?

For me, I was at a viewing party two years ago. I thought Best Revival of a Play was between The Glass Menagerie and Twelfth Night. But when Clint Eastwood announced that the winner for Best Direction of a Play was Kenny Leon for A Raisin in the Sun, I was like “WOW! Didn’t see that coming at all.”

I agree with you there about A Raisin In The Sun. I think there will be a big surprise this year. I think instead of Lin-Manuel Miranda or Leslie Odom, Jr. winning for Hamilton, Danny Burstein will win for Fiddler On The Roof.

The NY Times Voter Poll this year surveyed about 171 out of 846 voters. Leslie Odom, Jr. seems to be the favorite among the voters that were surveyed, so we’ll see what happens.

I’m so torn. Is it going to be Odom or Burstein??? After the NY Times piece, I’m tempted to say Odom. But this reminds me a lot of last year. Many pundits were predicting Chenowith, but sentiment really carried O’Hara who had never won before.

So will Odom or Burstein win? Help!!!

Well, if it helps, in last year’s Times poll, O’Hara was ahead and ended up winning. So I’m going Odom.

Leslie Odom Jr. It is an amazing role and he is brilliant in it.

“American Psycho” could win at least one or both Tonys which it’s nominated for.

I think the only surprise of the Tonys this year was Shuffle Along… losing Best Choreography to Hamilton. I saw both shows this past Saturday, and I thought Savion Glover had a real shot of winning the award.

But then again, when Andy Blankenbuehler won his first Tony for In the Heights in 2008, most people predicted Rob Ashford to take it for Cry-Baby.

When I started this thread, I was asking you all about what was the biggest surprise you’ve encountered at the Tonys, and every other post went way off topic.

Once again, what was the biggest surprise you’ve ever encountered on the Tony Awards?

David Hyde Pierce over Raul Esparza was a pretty significant jaw-dropper.

I was personally very surprised when Colm Wilkinson didn’t win for Les Miserables. But that was a long time ago and I didn’t have access to all the industry information that we do today, with the internet. So I now realize Robert Lindsay was a foregone conclusion among theater insiders at the time.

Though I wasn’t following the Tonys in 1982, it’s a little surprising to me that Nine bested Dreamgirls. I’m not sure if theater insiders were surprised or not by that one.

My understanding is Nine was a soft front-runner, given all of the goodwill toward Tommy Tune, who directed the original production. That it held on for the top prize without Raul Julia prevailing as well, though, is impressive. Dreamgirls‘ Ben Harney, who beat Julia, was arguably more a Featured actor but moved up to clear the way for Cleavant Derricks and give the production a presence in Lead Actor. Of course, he ended up scoring the upset.

At this year’s Tony Awards, I totally didn’t expect Eclipsed to win Best Costume Design. I thought Long Day’s Journey Into Night was a lock there. Speaking of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, I was surprised that it won Best Lighting Design. I know Tony voters are big fans of Natasha Katz and her work, but I thought The Humans would be a lock for its lighting design.

1981 Best Actress in a Play
Jane Lapotaire for Piaf over Elizabeth Taylor for The Little Foxes

Lapotaire received a rave review from the New York Times which dismissed the quality of the play. Taylor, then married to US Senator John Warner, had captivated Broadway with a well reviewed production of the Lillian Hellman classic. Advanced sales reached $1M before opening. Applause was mild when her name was called, and the audience then cheered when it recovered from the surprise.

1996 Best Actress in a Musical
Donna Murphy in The King and I over Julie Andrews in Victor, Victoria

Murphy has won two seasons earlier for Sondheim’s Passion. Andrews, even though she declined the nomination, had never won a Tony and was expected to prevail. Presenters Bernadette Peters and Liza Minnelli nervously giggled when standing center stage to present the award amidst the controversy. The room rose to its feet and roared when Murphy’s name was called.
