For fun, consider if you will:

A disgruntled producer is frustrated that Hamilton is going to steal all the Tony awards and press from his or her production. In order to stop the Hamilton onslaught, they jump in a time machine. Traveling back to when Hamilton is performing at the Public. They steal funds from the show forcing it to cancel its Broadway transfer. In this alternate reality what do the Tony nominations look like without the juggernaut in play? Who ultimately wins?

I agree with most of those, though I probably would’ve given Score & Orchestrations to Bright Star.

I wonder if there are any shows that may have come in this season and changed the landscape if they weren’t trying to duck Hamilton?

I think Arden would have won director for Spring Awakening. I still think Psycho has a shot with lighting design

I’d put Arden fourth or fifth likely to win in Sam’s nominee list, based solely on the reception of The Color Purple, She Loves Me, and Shuffle Along, respectively, and the fact that all three of these shows are still open. In the real race, I think that last slot probably came down to Arden or Bart Sher, and Sher has been recognized many times before.

Bright Star would certainly stand a chance for Score, but many people take issue with its lyrics. And given that Sara Bareilles has the first Broadway song to crack the billbaord charts in forever (“she used to be mine”), I think she would ultimately prevail. For the real life Tonys, I have her in a (very distant) #2 slot.

I had a lot of trouble choosing a Best Director winner in the lineup, as I think its a fairly even playing field. But Doyle and Arden are both credited for reinventing their respective shows for the better. But with The Color Purple still being open, I gave the edge to Doyle.
