Lane was truly extraordinary, with Lithgow (!) runner-up for me.

Harvey Fierstein, with Hugh Jackman a close 2nd. I saw BEAUTY AND THE BEAST when I was 8 I believe and HAIRSPRAY was my 2nd Broadway show at 13. I didn’t know anything about it, what the Tonys really meant then, and I was blown away. It was a few days after it swept the the Tonys so the energy in the theater was awesome.

Paolo Szot’s rendition of “This Nearly Was Mine” was one of the most exceptional pieces of singing it’s been my privilege to witness on a Broadway stage. But as his acting was just passable, I’m going with Norbert here. He tore up the stage of the Imperial in that role.

Don’t get me started on the idiocy of the Tonys giving the award to all the Billy Elliots in a joint nomination.
