I’m curious to hear your opinions. There are several musicals that haven’t been on Broadway in a long while that I think are due for revivals. Such as…

    1776
    Annie Get Your Gun
    Camelot
    Carousel
    Damn Yankees
    The Full Monty
    Grand Hotel
    Kiss Me, Kate
    Kiss of the Spider Woman
    Mame
    Man of La Mancha
    My Fair Lady
    Nine
    Oklahoma!
    Oliver!
    Once On This Island
    Passion
    The Secret Garden
    Show Boat
    Urinetown
    The Will Rogers Follies

What are some musicals you guys think are due for revivals? Who would you also like to see directing and/or starring in them?

Neither Redhead, the Tony winner for Best Musical of 1959, nor Fiorello!, the Tony winner for Best Musical of 1960, have ever been revived on Broadway.

I’ve always found it rather shocking that Applause, the All About Eve musical which won a boatload of Tonys including the top prize in 1970, has never been revived, sans a skeletal Encore! production a number of years back with Christine Ebersole. It’s a piece tailored to leading ladies who aren’t necessarily the greatest of singers, so any A-lister could dive into the role – imagine, for instance, Annette Bening tackling it.

Applause has some gay elements that would likely play as very dated and offensive today and would require extensive rewriting. And there is a history of rights issues with the book of the musical which may be too complex for anyone to try to iron out to make those changes. This probably explains why it hasn’t been done on any large scale, but I agree it could be turned into a terrific vehicle for divas “of a certain age”.

The Who’s Tommy. Not that it seems like every other theater is home to a rockish type musical it is a better time to have Tommy on board. It’s such a fantastic musical that really doesn’t get its due. I think we have alot of great “rockstar” actors like John Gallagher Jr., Alex Brightman, and even the guys that did Hedwig that could do wonders with a Tommy revival. It would be fun to see Urinetown come back since that also seems like it never got its due especially coming out during that dark period for Broadway post 9/11. Once on This Island also doesn’t seem like it got its due and would be a wonderful show to revive. It’s crazy that Mame has not been revived recently. It’s such a delightful show! 1776 might want to come back to piggy back on Hamilton’s success but honestly it really never needs to be revived with Hamilton around. It’s just boring in my opinion. I know Forum was supposed to come back with James Corden before he booked Late Late Show but I would love him to take a few months off in the summer, launch it and then return to the Late Late show in the fall or just revive it with someone else and have Corden come in as a limited engagement. It’s strange that The Sound of Music isn’t revived since its one of the most popular movie musicals of all time. Suessical is another show that I’m very surprised didn’t really do well its first go around. It’s very popular in schools now so it might work better if it is revived
