I’ve got a feeling there will be at least one tie on Sunday, since there are so many hotly contested categories (: I’m kinda hoping for a tie or two…
Here are categories where it could happen, maybe:
Lead Actor in a Musical (Harris and Mays; they tied at the Drama Desks)
Lead Actress in a Play (Jones and McDonald)
Featured Actress in a Musical (Hall and Worsham)
Director of a Musical (Mayer and Tresnjak)
Score (Brown and Lutvak/Freedman)
Orchestrations (Brown and Sidwell)
Any other potential ties??
There have only been 10 ties in the history of the Tony Awards and there are close races every year. With 800+ voters, it’s just not statistically likely. Though it’s fun when it happens (especially Best Original Score in 1993).
I’ll be overjoyed if a tie happens, but Im not predicting it. Featured Actress in a Musical would be my choice for the tie, Director of a Musical too. But tie in the precursors are more common because they are decided by a very small number of voters. Theres almost 850 Tony voters I believe, which makes a tie very hard to come by.
I’m not a fan of ties. There should only be one winner.
No ties ever!
I’m fine with ties, I’ve given a few in my personal Oscar world.
That being said, the only categories I would support a tie in are Actor (Harris and Mays) and Actress (Mueller and O’Hara) in a Musical.
Hedwig should be a sole director winner. I liked Gentleman’s Guide (didn’t love it) and found many aspects of it award-worthy but found its direction bland (with the exception of “I’ve Decided to Marry You” which was expertly done).
