    Ebersole in Grey Gardens

And for what it’s worth, Ebersole in 42nd Street would probably rank last for me.

The Lead Actress winners are much more iconic than the male ones, it’s interesting. I agree with Andrew, definitely Christine Ebersole in GREY GARDENS. I’d then say a tie between Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters in GYPSY (who didn’t win, but lost to Marissa J Winokur) because I loved both of their Mama Roses equally. Then, I would have to say Victoria Clark in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA. Heather Headley gets my honorable mention because I didn’t get to see it, but the videos I’ve seen of her in AIDA on YouTube I love so if I had seen her performance it would’ve probably been a fave.

Idina. So sue me. I saw her about three months in (before her voice got hamburgered later in the run) and the vocal fireworks were thrilling. Rent made her known, but Wicked made her a star.

I also saw Ebersole (in Grey Gardens) and Clark and both were absolutely exquisite and perfect, but there was just a raw excitement to Idina in Wicked that no one else matched. I would also argue that Idina beat out the strongest pool of nominees for her Tony.

And didn’t deserved the award over Pinkins and, maybe, Murphy. Sorry.

Indeed, that totally should’ve been Pinkins’ Tony. Though Murphy probably would’ve won had she not missed a ton of performances.
