This evening’s performance of Wicked is the 5000th at the Gershwin Theatre. It’s only the 11th production in Broadway history to reach that milestone and I think it should get extra points because it’s lasted this long in an 1800+ seat barn of a house.
Say what you might about the show (the score is pedestrian except for the leading ladies’ songs, the book bites off more themes that it can chew, etc.), it’s still pleased an awful lot of people and introduced them to live theater and it was the real launching pad for Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth to go on to huge careers.
