She was hardly the lead in KVK IMO. She disappeared in that film for long durations of time. I don't know if she would've gotten in lead. As for a Tony/Grammy; all she has to do is record a spoken album about anything and dedicate a couple months to some broadway play and she's got them both. Though unlike people like Winslet and others, Streep doesn't care about the awards. (She just wins them all cause she's the best.) |

I don't remember Streep as a Lead in Kramer vs Kramer (or Adaptation for that matter). Can we get a screentime count for those two films? Just out of curiousity, I don't automatically think screentime defines a role as Lead or Supporting.. More about the importance of the role. |

I think it was in her Wiki page that I read that she has 5 Grammy noms, including the one for Mamma Mia. Does anyone know the exact number? |

The celebrity citizen of Lakeville Connecticut has been seen in town a few times recently, buying plants and seeds and fresh vegetables...I had the pleasure of seeing husband Don in town and chatting briefly about his sculpting and he is such a pleasant and down to earth guy..You can just see how these 2 belong together. I asked about the chances of seeing Meryl in a broadway theater for a limited run any time soon....I was told that she mulls scripts of playwrights all the time...so it does seem immenent to me that she will win her lead actress in a play Tony soon!!! |

As I wrote here earlier, someone wrote that she was a double contender for "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "Manhattan" and there was a possibility that she will sneak into Lead for "Kramer vs. Kramer" as she did at the BAFTAs and film was obviously huge (as was she, due to "Deer Hunter" and "Julia" and all the films she had that year). - Would Streep have won over Sally Field for Norma Rae. I don't think so. IMO she owned the screen but also disappeared for far too long, IMO, to be considered as lead. So Oscars did place her right. Sally Field was winning no matter what, I think. - Whose spot would Streep have taken? Besides Field (first nom), the other noms were Jill Clayburgh/Starting Over (second nom, previously nominated the year before in Lead/An Unmarried Woman); Jane Fonda/The China Syndrome (fifth nom, previously won Lead for both 1971/Klute and the year before, 1978/Coming Home. Also nominated for Lead in 1969/They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and 1977/Julia); Marsha Mason/Chapter Two (third nom, previously nominated in Lead for 1973/Cinderella Liberty and 1977/The Goodbye Girl); and Bette Midler (first nom). Hard to think about it. Midler won the Globe and certainly was in. Jill Clayburgh and Marsha Mason had the best periods of their careers (rare year with more Comedy/Musical contenders at the Oscars than from the Drama field). Jane Fonda just won her 2nd Best Actress (over Geraldine Page and Ingrid Bergman, yikes) and there was no need to reward her further but she still was a heavy contender, picking up nods for "China Syndrome" everywhere and even winning at the BAFTAs. I don't know. It was probably Jill Clayburgh but we'll never know and can only guess. - Would, by default, Jane Alexander/Kramer vs. Kramer then won Supporting Actress (her third nom, previously nominated in Lead for 1970/The Great White Hope and in Supporting for 1976/All the President's Men)? Her fellow nominees (aside from Streep, of course) were Barbara Barrie/Breaking Away (first nom and only nom to date); Candice Bergen/Starting Over (first nom and only nom to date); and Mariel Hemingway/Manhattan (first nom and only nom to date). I seriously doubt Jane Alexander was a contender. I would rather say that her nomination was a part of the film sweep and she was no threat to Streep at all, just like Queen Latifah wasn't to Catherine Zeta-Jones. Maybe Candice Bergen would have won with Streep in the lead. - Who would then have received the open spot in Supporting Actress? Two that received Golden Globe noms but not Oscar noms were Kathleen Beller/Promises in the Dark and Valerie Harper/Chapter Two (the other three being Alexander and Streep for Kramer vs. Kramer and Candice Bergen/Starting Over). This hypothetical goes over into the next question... Would Streep had been a double-nominee, Lead for Kramer vs. Kramer, Supporting for The Seduction of Joe Tynan OR Manhattan. I never knew she was in contention for three Supporting performances that year. If Streep would have replaced herself, which role would it have been for? I'm quite positive that Streep would take a 5th spot for "Manhattan". - Lastly - and this is a biggie - in such a tight race with Jessica Lange/Frances would Streep have won a second Lead Oscar so soon for Sophie's Choice. "Sophie's Choice" was that kind of performance that would win no matter what. Like Foster also won for "The Silence of the Lambs" despite just winning for "The Accused" and still being under 30. |

I don't think Meryl cares about being an EGOT very much. She could go to the Broadway now, they'll welcome her with open arms and with er huge legacy on the back now she could win a Tony easily. But as long as people wants to see her on the big screen, she'll do these film with leading roles for older woman. I think that's most important to her at the moment. As long as she gets these chances, she'll take them, no matter what. Although, if I could, I'd dragg her into a music studio to record an album, because she has such a lovely singing voice. I can't believe her agent's not BEGGING her to do this!!! And I honestly didn't feel like Meryl was only 15 minutes in "Kramer vs. Kramer". It felt really longer to me. Like she was always there, even when she wasn't on screen. Similar to the feeling of Anthony Hopkins in "The Silence of the Lambs" and he won in lead for only 17 minutes screentime. BTW, it's interesting Meryl has now 3 Oscars for playing the role of the movie title. *gg*

^She should definitely do an album. That was my favorite part of Mammi Mia! When she sang. She has a better voice than most artists of today. Though the album would probably flop. I think a better scenario is had she won for the French Lieutenants Woman (She won almost every Pre-Curser and Critics award making her the Front runner) would she still win for Sophie the next year? I know SC was one of the best performances done by a human being, but would they really give an actor 3 Oscars in the matter of 4 years in the beginning of their career? |

That's an interesting case. But I think Meryl would still have won for SC, because that performance was too damn baity and heartbreaking to be ignored and I doubt Jessica Lange would have won twice on the same evening. Though it is possible at the Globes, but no, not at the Oscars.

But Lange only won in supporting to make up her ''lost'' in lead, imo. |

For a second in 2008 I thought Kate Winslet was about to win two.. Did any talk come up about Sigourney and Jessica winning two in the 80's? All three were conceivable, unlike Moore, Thompson and Hunter during their double nods. |

^If the Oscars had gone along with her fraudulent placement in supporting for 'The Reader', I think she might have too just like at the Globes. |

See I've never really bought that explanation/excuse. Such a shame that this was in the same year as Sophie's Choice because Jessica Lange's performance in Frances really deserved an Oscar as well. However, Lange won some top critics prizes that year for Tootsie(NY, NSFC among others) and I dont see them all giving her Best Supporting Actress just because Meryl was winning Lead. Thats just me though. |
