Because you knew it was coming! My all-time favorite actress. Her career has never been charmed and she's never had a box-office hit that didn't involve a monster, a man in drag or a maniac - or ALL three! - but she's still loved by her peers and highly respected for her gritty, riveting work. She has two upcoming projects: she has moved from a supporting character to headlining the 2nd season of the hugely popular and successful American Horror Story this fall and is currently shooting an adaptation of Émile Zola's Thérèse Raquin co-starring Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Felton, Oscar Isaac and Matt Lucas. Discuss your love for, dislike of or indifference to her work. Works: Filmography [edit]Television ![]() |

I'm mixed on Lange. Others are more familiar with her work than I am, but it seems like she's either drunk when she plays a lot of her characters, or she's deciding to make her character drunk.

LoL, this is a puzzling observation. I've seen her be ditzy and drunk when the character calls for it (King Kong, Blue Sky, A Streetcar Named Desire, etc.), fiery and strong willed (Frances, Sweet Dreams) and also quite solid and sober when the character calls for that, too (Country, Music Box, Men Don't Leave). I've also seen her be effervescent (Tootsie, Grey Gardens). What performances of hers are you familiar with? ![]() |

I saw Grey Gardens, Streetcar, Blue Sky and American Horror Story in the span of a few months, so that's probably why I get the connection. It's a kind of drunken, psychotic state (her eyes, mostly). However, I've seen her different elsewhere (like O! Pioneers and Tootsie).

My favorite of those four works is her take on Big Edie. Barrymore more than held her own but Lange demolished that role. A deserved Emmy win and in the correct category as well.

Well, she's the queen of playing unhinged characters; she's better at it than any other actress, I would say. All others come off, even the littlest bit, as if they're trying to be unhinged. Lange just comes off as unhinged. From an excellent, excellent article by Nick Davis, a reviewer and fan, on Lange's appeal:
http://www.nicksflickpicks.com/osactreslange.html My favorite quality of hers is probably, as stated above, the one quality that has a habit of distancing her from the audience: it's the anger, passion and volatility she infuses her characters with and the gritty realism with which she does it that captivates me so. No other actress has shocked me with her emotional and physical explosiveness the way Lange has when she's on her game. ![]() |

![]() What is wrong with you people! I know some of you have some spicier words for Lange - good, bad and indifferent. What do you think Vampirella, ScottFerguson, Miss Frost... curious to know. In other news, there's been a bit of a craze on twitter because Tom Felton tweeted that he has arrived in Belgrade, Serbia to shoot Thérèse Raquin. I need this movie, like, now. Same with AHS 2. Both are months and months away, though.

I've lost track of her the last few years, although I did see her in "Grey Gardens", where I felt she was 'better' than Drew, Part of that might have been because of Drew's prosthetic chin, which looked hilarious to me. I thought Jessica, was fabulous. The last film I saw her in is "Bonneville". I loved her, and the entire cast. I think Lange can fill those big shoes left by the great Barbara Stanwyck as Victoria Barkley. Another thing I love about Jessica is that, she was an incredible centrefold, has brains, and has humanitarian aspirations. Plus, she can act, and holds her own with the best of them, including the iconic King Kong. The Sunne in Splendour; I prefer my Roses White |

I haven't seen the majority of Miss Lange's movies, unfortunately, but I have never seen her give a bad performance, ever. Even better, I have never seen her give a boring performance, which is a greater accomplishment than it sounds. Miss Lange always brings something fresh and edgy to every role. My favorite performance by Miss Lange is her powerful, moving turn in the tragic role of Frances Farmer in FRANCES. In fact, I often quote Miss Lange's character when asked what I do for a living--when Frances gets arrested and is asked by the desk sergeant her occupation, she answers with a mischievous gleam in her eye: "Cocksucker!"

1. Re: "Bonneville" - how could you get past the botox? ::shiver:: Her performance was wonderfully nuanced, but I couldn't get past how horrible she looked. It was annoying and disheartening and took ALOT away from the impact of both the film and her performance. 2. "The Big Valley" never shot a frame and it certainly ain't happening now. Scandalz: http://www.deadline.com/2012/04/la-filmmaker-sentenced-in-massachusetts-tax-credit-scheme/ 3. What do you think of her as Madame Raquin?
LoL, bitch, you're too much. We've gone at it a few times over La Streep, but thanks for giving props to Lady Lange and for always being a good sport. ![]() |

3. What do you think of her as Madame Raquin? Close to perfection; that's what I think and am hoping. Are you sure about The Big Valley? Shucks! Now there's a western I would have watched! Yes, her botox in "Bonneville" was 'there'; but I dont blame her for it. Besides, it's been noticeable for a while now. She was still wonderful, along with the rest of the cast. I especially liked the cameo by, I think his character name was "Bo", the young musician they picked up on the road. The Sunne in Splendour; I prefer my Roses White |

'Cause I want everyone to know:
Chloë Sevigny is on the verge of joining "American Horror Story" 2 as a nemesis to Lange's character!!!!!![]() This will be the second time Lange and Sevigny work together. They first co-starred in Jim Jaramusch's "Broken Flowers" as presumed lesbian lovers. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/american-horror-story-chloe-sevigny-317110 'American Horror Story': Chloe Sevigny in Talks for Season 2 The "Big Love" star would play a rival to Jessica Lange's character, who runs an East Coast institution for the criminally insane.
American Horror Story may have a new rival for Jessica Lange. Big Love's Chloe Sevigny is near a deal to join the FX horror anthology series for its rebooted second season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. As first reported by EW, Sevigny would play Shelly the Nymphomaniac, a foil for Lange's character in the drama from Glee co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. American Horror Story's second season will feature a new premise, location and while it will there will be some returning cast members, they'll all play characters completely different from their Season 1 roles. Murphy revealed earlier this month that Season 2 would take place at an East Coast institution for the criminally insane that would be run by Lange's character, potentially set in a different era as well. "It's a completely different world and has nothing to do with Season 1; there's not a mention of Season 1," he said recently. "The second season is set in a completely different time period." In addition to Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters,Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabewill return, with new cast members including The Voice's Adam Levine and French actress Lizzie Brochere joining the series for Season 2. Sevigny, repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment, starred on HBO's Big Love from 2006-11 and recently popped up on NBC's Law & Order: SVU. What do you think of the casting? Is she a fit for AHS? ![]() |

"Close to perfection", lol. She would've been, but I'm glad my girl is finally in a film and with a role full of promise. She could very well get her 7th Oscar nod for this. Re: Big Valley, Sara Paxton did an interview this year in which she stated, " “We haven’t done it [yet],” Paxton explains. “I got involved in that last year. It’s hard because there are so many famous people in it on television shows so all the schedules need to like, go. I'm just waiting for them to make it.” http://www.popentertainment.com/sarapaxton2012.htm I was looking forward to her in Big Valley, too. As for the botox, I think she started using that around 2004/2005 with Wim Wenders' Don't Come Knocking (what a fantastic f*cking performance utterly marred by this stupid choice). Check out this explosive scene between her and Sam Shepard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQBAh8EWiVM Gah! Even still, her performance is so strong in this, I can almost overlook the botox. Almost. Also, if you watch her in Broken Flowers (2005), she looks fantastic and you can tell she still hasn't had any work done. Anyway, she started using it around the time she was trying to get Chéri made (apparently she wasn't accepting that she was too old for the part). That horrid look continued on through Neverwas, Bonneville and Sybil. She started looking herself/great again beginning with Grey Gardens and when I saw her in American Horror Story, that was when I first experienced true relief at realizing she hadn't had permanent work done but, rather, had been using injectibles. She looked so much herself, so her age and so expressive on the show and, honestly, I think that's partly why she experienced such success with it. Her performance is undoubtedly out of this world and she deserved/deserves all the awards, but I also think Hollywood was relieved, too, to see her looking so fresh and normal again. I think to some it felt like her going that route was somewhat of a betrayal. Also, remember, despite how divisive her career and performances are, Lange is still a legend and will always remain one. ![]() |

For what it's worth...The toughest Lead Actress race of the 1980s was for 1982, Meryl Streep/Sophie's Choice versus Jessica Lange/Frances. Though the better of the two prevailed, this was the year of that decade where a tie would have been justified. Sidebar: For the 90s, I consider the toughest to be 1999, Annette Bening/American Beauty versus Hilary Swank/Boys Don't Cry. The better of the two [performances] prevalied. For the 2000s, it would be 2002, Nicole Kidman/The Hours versus Rene Zellweger/Chicago. The better performance did not prevail. And I think we've already probably had our coin-toss of the 2010-present years, with it being last year's Meryl Streep/The Iron Lady versus Viola Davis/The Help. (And yes, the better of the two performances prevailed.) Back on topic, Lange would ultimately get her due in the most dead year of performances by actresses in leading roles for Blue Sky. She was fine in Tootsie but nothing at all nomination-worthy, let alone win-worthy, especially since the category contained a true standout performance: Glenn Close in The World According to Garp. Regardless, I love Lange and am happy that she has plenty of hardware on her mantle. It was a real treat seeing three stars of the 80s - Lange, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close - dominating awards season in 2011-2012, three decades after they made their mark on Hollywood. Some aren't so fortunate (Faye Dunaway comes to mind...among others). -Morgan |
