http://playbill.com/news/article/165366-Drama-Desk-Nominations-Announced-Death-Takes-a-Holiday-and-Follies-Lead-the-Pack Again, lots of top Tony contenders ineligible because of previous Off-Broadway productions on the play side. The surprises on the musical side seem to be that Leap of Faith (which was punched in the face by every critic in town last night) has more nominations than both "Once" and "Newsies", very bizarre. Also both leading actors from "Once" are nowhere to be found. Though these are the most legitimate of the precursors, they still have essentially nothing to do with the Tonys and I expect inconsistencies between the two lists will be numerous this year. |

Other than the 'Once' actors, I'm also surprised only two performers from 'Death of a Salesman' got mentioned and neither of them are Linda Emond or Andrew Garfield. Also, no director nod for 'Newsies'... interesting. And 'Bonnie and Clyde' is bouncing back rather nicely. |

They are legit, which makes the love for "Leap of Faith" all the more interesting. After last night's critical drubbing, I had written off "Leap" in terms of nominations, but maybe there's some life in this one yet. At the very least, it keeps Esparza's hopes alive for a Tony nomination. |

Among some other notable snubs: no Alan Rickman, John Lithgow, Nina Arianda, Cynthia Nixon, and especially no Elena Roger (but Ricky Martin gets in?)... oy. |

Arianda was eligible last year. Only Hugh Dancy was eligible from this production because he didn't appear in the Off-Broadway version (same thing with Judith Light/Other Desert Cities). Elena Roger is so painfully miscast, just can't handle the score, it's really baffling to me why they chose her. Ricky Martin gave the sort of performance any high school kid would give; it was embarrassing. |

I agree with the Elena Roger comments...before the cast of this revival was even announced, I wondered if they would bring her over so I recall looking her up on YouTube thinking it was so great to actually have an Eva Peron who was actually from Argentina. What I saw was definitely a strong actress, but someone who could not handle the score. "A New Argentina" had no power and she had to squeak those notes out. Now, I say this sadly because she has given MUCH better performances in "Piaf" and "Passion" on the West End that were definitely wonderful, but I honestly think vocally that she should never have been selected. As for the rest of the nominations, I am surprised that Bonnie and Clyde has had a small comeback especially considering how it didn't get the best reviews and it only ran for like a month PLUS "Lysistrata Jones" got better notices and was still primarily ignored. Despite this, I never saw "Bonnie & Clyde" live, only clips and the cast recording and what I have heard and seen I am mixed on. Musically, I think it is Frank Wildhorn's best score and that is saying a lot because this is coming from someone who has thoroughly hated most of his work...prior to this, the only thing of his I remotely tolerated was "The Scarlet Pimpernel"....but here, he does a lot of fresh new things mixed in with his usual fluff (and I question the era apporpriate-ness in the music), but in a weak year like this, I feel this score may be worthy to get him a nomination. I think "Follies" and "Death Takes a Holiday" leading the pack is wonderful...especially the latter...oh, if only it could have been on Broadway and not Off-Broadway. After a good year last year, we are back to having a lackluster year for new musicals....though maybe not as bad as 2009-2010....however that year had great revivals...this year there aren't as many. |

Something tells me the leads from "Once" were ineligible bc there's no reason they shouldn't be here. So many shows were in eligible for these awards that you can't take them seriously this year. |
