Hey folks, what are the rules for performers being nominated twice in the same category? Is it even allowed? |

Recently, every year the Tonys have thrown us a wild-card nominee in the Best Musical category. 2011 - Catch Me if You Can instead of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 2010 - Million Dollar Quartet instead of Everyday Rapture 2009 - Rock of Ages instead of 9 to 5 This year, I think the wild-card will be Spider-Man, and I think that Reeve Carney is going to get into Musical Actor as well.

My final predictions are posted in the whole predictions-game-center thing.. The only two major snubs I predicted were Bernadette Peters (due to overwhelming competition, not performance) and Matthew Broderick (due to performance). Best Musical does have a lingering open slot, so for those who think Spider-Man has a shot, it very well might. My prediction for that fourth spot is Leap of Faith. |

Some not-so-sure, or even unlikely, things I'd like to see tomorrow would be: -Venus in Fur in Best Play -Hugh Dancy in Best Actor in a Play -Tyne Daly in Best Actress in a Play -Tom Hewitt (JCS) in Best Featured Actor in a Musical -NaTasha Yvette Williams (Porgy and Bess) in Best Featured Actress in a Musical -Some member of the cast of Clybourne Park nominated -Evita in Orchestrations (maybe the only thing I liked about the production) I suspect Newsies will lead the nominations. Most categories seem to have 3 sure bets followed by a lot of guess work. The race for the fourth Best Musical slot is a race to be the least offensive of a really uninspiring group of artistic and/or financial flops. We'll see what they compromise on. |

The Tony Awards Honor Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters, and Actors’ Equity Association Isabelle Stevenson Award: Bernadette Peters The recipient of the Isabelle Stevenson Award will be Tony Award winning actress Bernadette Peters. The Isabelle Stevenson Award recognizes an individual from the theatre community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations, regardless of whether such organizations relate to the theatre. Ms. Peters founded "Broadway Barks!", along with Mary Tyler Moore, as a program to promote the adoption of shelter animals. Broadway Barks! has evolved into an event that not only focuses on the plight of homeless animals but has opened the door of communication and fostered a spirit of community among the numerous shelters and rescue groups working throughout New York. Ms. Peters has also written two children’s books to benefit the charity – "Broadway Barks" and "Stella is a Star". Additionally, Ms. Peters works with a number of charities including Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Standing Tall, and Actors Fund of America. Special Tony Awards – Actors’ Equity Association and Hugh Jackman The Tony Awards Administration Committee will present a Special Tony Award to Actors' Equity Association, which starting in the month of June will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. Additionally, The Tony Awards Administration Committee will present a Special Tony Award to Tony Award-winning actor and three-time Tony Awards telecast host Hugh Jackman. Mr. Jackman is being honored for his contributions to the Broadway community, both as a performer and humanitarian; his tireless dedication to charitable works of many types; and his personal generosity of spirit. |

Wow, some surprises here. Laura Osnes getting in, Joe Mantello snubbed. Leap of Faith gets the meaningless fourth Best Musical slot, but Raul Esparza is left out. And The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess gets two of the Featured Actor slots. Best Actress in a Play is an absolute knock-down fight. I would wager that is a razor-thin margin in the final vote. Nixon is the only one without a shot. Kind of surprising that Peter and the Starcatcher and Venus in Fur both made it in for Best Play instead of at least one of those slots going to something like Seminar or The Lyons or One Man, Two Guvnors. Best Score is a joke. Just give it to Newsies now and have done with it. "How is a Lorax-blowing tree-hugger like you anti-immigration?"--Sterling Archer |

Well, what an absolute joke this year. So many bad choices. The play categories are fine, although the omission of Tyne Daly for Masterclass is not the best. I'm fine with Best Actor in a Play. But the musical categories are a mess. Broderick & Esparza both out? And as for actress in a musical no Elena Roger? Clearly New York doesn't see what London did. Plus, no Bernadette either? Both would have been better than Laura Osnes. And no Elaine Paige for Follies? She knocked I'm Still Here right out of the park and yet still nothing? Plus, I haven't seen Once, but if its as bad as the film was, then I'm sorry, but I just fail to see what the attraction of it is...Although I have to say that at least this year its not a case of Tony favourites being automatically nominated, apart from McDonald, it's nice to see the Tony's brancing out, but all the same, its a bit of a rubbish year in the musical categories - my interest in the race has now disappeared. But I do hope Corden & Bennett win in the Play categories! |

"Leap of Faith" got a nomination for Best Musical and nothing else! Jan Maxwell joins Boyd Gaines, Raul Esparza and Angela Lansbury as the only performers to get nominations in all four acting categories. Condola Rashad is a Tony nominee, following in the footsteps of her mother, Tony winner Phylicia Rashad. Other mother/daughter teams nominated for a Tony (they have all won): Vanessa Redgrave & Natasha Richardson, Rosemary Harris & Jennifer Ehle, Tammy Grimes & Amanda Plummer. |
