But let's say that he does get in. Then that is an extremely competitive race and I have no idea who wins. I see it as a three-way race between Peter Dinklage, Aaron Paul and Giancarlo Esposito. Tyrion has to be just about everyone's favourite character on television these days, so he certainly has the buzz, but his big money scene speech in "Blackwater" is just a minute long (watch it on YouTube), so it is objectively shorter than Aaron Paul's potentially winning scene and dare I say that it objectively requires less range. Then again, he does appear a lot in his episode and voters will be cheering for him. I think that "Problem Dog" is Aaron Paul's best bet because it (almost) ends with that what is almost a five-minute devastating monologue by Jesse (YouTube). But knowing Aaron Paul, he will probably submit "End Times" because his screen time is more consistent throughout the episode and he has more of an arc. Paul's best work in "End Times" is not quite as strong as his best work in "Problem Dog", but he does still have great scenes (like this one with Bryan Cranston). Then there is Giancarlo Esposito, who is not as good as Aaron Paul, but is very much fully immersed in his role, plays a villain who is redeemed in "Hermanos" (best that YouTube could do) and this is his only chance to win, so I could see them rewarding him like they did with Željko Ivanek when Michael Emerson had the better tape. |

It does deserve a writing nod this year for "Blue Ribbon Panel", and it could get a nom. |

Great post with glaring examples of why anyone but Paul winning would be a crime though. |

This just reminds me of why this show must and if is any justice in this world will win drama series mainly , actor and supporting actor again, (I don't care if anyone complains, aslong as those actors keep deliverying performances more worth than oscar ones we have seen lately, they deserve to win) and I wish before the show ends Dean Norris wins too, but also, Peterfuckingdinklage is unbelieavable, rough fight!

Denis, I would love to see Michael Pitt get into this category, if only because I feel like we finally got to some juicy material with his character. "Under God's Power She Flourishes" or "To the Lost" could both be great tapes for him for entirely different reasons, and the season finale in particular could really give him an edge for certain reasons I will not mention. But Demonhog's analysis of the top three in Supporting Actor pretty much outlines how the award can't possibly go to anyone other than one of these men. Peter Dinklage needed "Blackwater" very, very badly. I was starting to wonder if he would have a tape at all. Even knowing that the battle was coming, and that Tyrion played a large part in it, I was curious if, when put onscreen, it would be a good episode for him. Aaron Paul continues to give one of my two favorite performances on television (the other being, ta da, Bryan Cranston), and the scene you posted from "End Times" makes me -- as a young actor in Paul's age range -- wonder how the hell I'm ever going to get work again with him taking things as far as he does emotionally. It is stellar. His choice back in 2010 of "Half Measures" over "One Minute" illustrates that he prefers his episodes with an arc, rather than a baity monologue; for that reason, he'll probably go with "End Times" and not "Problem Dog." At this point, I'm still betting on Esposito winning, even if I acknowledge that his tape is not as strong as Paul's. He will be another new winner, he will not be eligible for this role again, and his character is getting a steady amount of buzz, even a year later. If the pattern continues, Esposito takes it. If the pattern stops, we'll be saying "two-time Emmy winner Aaron Paul."

A month or two ago, I would have said that Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Homeland and Game of Thrones were evenly locked in a four-way tie for the ultimate Outstanding Drama Series title. Entering June, this is now very much a three-way race. Game of Thrones seems to have squandered their buzz quite a bit. It did not do as well as it could have last year, missing three easy nominations for art direction, original score and theme music and nominations for Sean Bean, Emilia Clarke and Alan Taylor would have meant that it was destined to win series that year. At the same time, the show managed to match the most nominations that Lost ever got in a single year, it got Peter Dinklage a win and hopefully put to rest any supposed anti-fantasy biases that voters have (just kidding, the Internet will never lay that to rest). Game of Thrones certainly gained momentum over its first season, went out on a high note and the consensus from those who read the books was that we were in for an even better season of television and something that really could be the best show of the year. I do not know if this season has actually been worse (I think that it has), but it has certainly not lived up to expectations and few would say that it has been better. Before "Blackwater", I would have been at a loss to FYC any particular episode for writing, directing, editing or acting. I think that the finale has the potential to be excellent and I really hope that it is, but this show is out of the race. I am four episodes behind on Mad Men and from what I can tell, the series is not substantially better or worse than before, so it is very much in contention after receiving more nominations than ever last year. (Guest actress really needs to go back to five nominess—Cara Buono and Randee Heller, seriously?) Breaking Bad was the best series on television in 2011 according to most critics and had more buzz than ever, so it has to be on an upswing. It could win. And I do not pretend to understand it, but Homeland has quite a bit of critical acclaim and has done fairly well in the precursors, so it is also a very real threat. I need to finish Mad Men before I can make any winner prediction. |

Both deserved their nominations. If you're going to cite a baffling inclusion in that category, start with the winner. |

I honestly don't believe he has the tape to beat Aaron Paul who in my opinion has the strongest tape, unless we get to see Tyrion's ...[spoiler in white-->] argument with his father on the season finale which if the writers are faithfull with the books could get his second win [end of spoiler] But, the totally deserves a nomination, it would be a crime no to have Pitt in the mix.
I think he is right in submiting "End Times", and he could win easily with it, and I also think that would be a excellent tape for Cranston but he is such a great actor and his character is so well written that it is amazing to see that he has better options. And since we are talking about supp. actors, I want to leave my opinion here and say that so far Slaterry do not deserve to be nominated for this mad men's season, Cudlitz from Southland did a much better job and I'm praying for voters to recognize this same with Regina King, the tape which was on Universal website someone posted here is excellent, and it's a winning tape, I don't remember from which of the episodes of that last season it actually belongs to but it is breathtaking.

Not saying that they were the worst nominated, but I think of the people who have never been nominated for an Emmy. |

Really liberal with the love for Damages, which makes me very happy as I would love to see everyone of these nominations happen. Some say it's too far off of Emmy's radar and if it gets in, it'll be a single nod for Close, only because of who she is and her dominating the category before. I think that's complete crap, but if I could pick two to get the noms it would be Close and most especially Rose Byrne. Fingers crossed you're right. |

Ironically Close is the one who deserves a nomination the least. Messina and Baker did marvelous work on the show, but unfortunately don't stand a chance. If one of the male actors gets in it will be Goodman, who was good but not as deserving as the other two. Byrne had one of her best season ever this year but is on the edge of being dropped. It's just not fair... Not to mention that Damages should be a serious contender for a Drama Series nomination, but that seems out of the question.
And if you wanna make sense

| ^I was just going to say this. I feel like if Baker got in he would we sneak into the conversation along with Paul and Dinklage unless he simply chooses the worst tape possible. There were so many episodes where he gave a stunning performance that with the right tape I see an updet. Messina also if he submits that premiere (and I can't imagine him now) would be very hard to beat. Especially for a guest actor. | |
