Thank you ikarlito!! Ann Harada not even getting nominated when she should have won Best Featured Actress is one of the worst omissions I can think of! Her reviews were stellar, too! "The More You Ruv Someone" is pure genius. Also, Stephanie J. Block should have been in the running for THE BOY FROM OZ that same year.

I actually don't mind Heather Headley's win, although I think both Audra McDonald and Marin Mazzie were more consistent.

And Becky Ann Baker for Assassins in 2004!  She was fantastic!

I actually would have given the Best Actress award in 2000 to Rebecca Luker for The Music Man.  Though Marin was amazing as well.  I didn't see Marie Christine.. but I'm sure Audra was awesome.

Also... I actually would have replaced Grey Gardens' nomination with Legally Blonde..  I really wasn't a fan.  I thought the show was pretty meh.  The only thing I LOVED about it was Mary Louise Wilson's performance.  She was terrific.  I was even lukewarm on Ebersole..

I would say Christine Ebersole is my favorite part of Broadway in the 2000's thus far. She played both parts just perfectly. She was one of those Tony wins that would have won in any year, against any competition.

The Lion King over Ragtime is obviously the big outrage, closely followed by Spamalot over The Light in the Piazza. Going back in time, it's obivous that West Side Story was well ahead of its time, as it wasn't appreciated as a masterpiece at first, losing the Tony to The Music Man--a fine show, but hardly a patch on WSS.

2004 is a fascinating year for me. I happen to find Wicked a very fun guilty pleasure (I saw the tour in Durham Saturday, as a matter of fact), but I do recognize that for everything about it that works, there's something that doesn't. I would have probably voted for it for Best Musical, though I don't really have a problem with Avenue Q's win. I would also let Avenue Q keep the Best Score Tony, since Wicked has great songs for the leading ladies, but the material for everyone else is serviceable at best. But I do think Wicked should have won Best Book. Holzman's script has great structure, it moves the story very efficiently and entertainingly between songs, and it has true character arcs for both Elphaba and G(a)linda. AQ's book just strikes me as... thin. I could never quite shake the feeling that it was an R-rated puppet show with cool songs. Wicked's book was much more ambitious (though it did bite off a bit more than it could chew with a couple of themes that weren't really explored) and I thought it did a great job of taking a kernel from the novel and turning it into something original that works for the stage. The original novel would never have worked on stage as a musical, but it would make a great non-musical film.

For the time being, I'll just look back at the past decade. I don't know that these would necessarily qualify as "outrages" as much as "Huh?... Well, I'll be darned." moments, but these were the "moments" I've had with the Tonys as of late:

2003:

Brian Dennehy over Eddie Izzard for Best Actor in a Play.

2004:

I have nothing against "Avenue Q," and comparing it to "Wicked" really is an apples vs. oranges proposition. But I would agree that "Wicked" was the overall more ambitious show, and for what it was, it got a lot more right than it got wrong. I would have ceded it the Book win, too, and while I probably would have given "Wicked" a Score trophy, too, I do understand the argument that the "Avenue Q" score is more consistent (though "For Now" slaps an unfortuante "dated" mechanism on it).

I thought the Featured Actress in a Musical category this year was a huge missed opportunity. For me, the perfect lineup would have been:

Randy Graff, "Fiddler on the Roof"
Ann Harada, "Avenue Q"
Isabel Keating, "The Boy from Oz"
Anika Noni Rose, "Caroline, or Change"
Carole Shelley, "Wicked"

2007:

The omission of Kevin Kline in Best Actor in a Play for "Cyrano de Bergerac."

The omission of Ashley Brown in Best Actress in a Musical for "Mary Poppins." (Granted, it was a stacked year, but I was slightly surprised that Debra Monk made it in.)

"Grey Gardens" winning Costume Design of a Musical over "Mary Poppins."

2008:

The tidal wave wins throughout the season for Paulo Szot, Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti...Gaines and Benanti were in roles that are easy to nominate, but they usually don't have the gravitas that translates into wins, and Szot had one of the stiffest characters in the Lead Actor in a Musical lineup this year.

"South Pacific" winning Costume Design of a Musical over... well, all the others.

2010:

Viola Davis being nominated for Lead Actress in a Play rather than Featured Actress, as her predecessor Mary Alice was.

Katie Finneran in "Promises, Promises" overtaking Angela Lansbury in an arguably showier role in "A Little Night Music." (Granted, this probably would have been a different race if Lansbury hadn't won the year before.)

2011:

Sutton Foster overtaking Donna Murphy for Lead Actress in a Musical. I wasn't surprised at all by the win on Tony night, and I won't dispute that Foster had by far the better vehicle, but her actual performance felt like a strong case of "been there, done that," whereas Murphy really gave what was for me the most dexterous and multi-faceted musical performance of the season.

I'm loving this thread, especially with it beginning with a reference to the Christian Hoff topic I started.  As a follow-up, I'd like to thank everyone for their informative reflections.  And Daniel Reichard mentioned Brandon Victor Dixon (The Color Purple) as the the surprise spoiler nominee, essentially replacing Reichard in the lineup.  Yet he said it with just the right, light amount of jest.  Daniel Reichard had been nominated for a Drama Desk Award that year along with co-star Christian Hoff.

No way, Jose!  Sure, there are elements of West Side Story that were ahead of its time, but it's pretty flawed.  I think the movie fixed a few of its problems.  The Music Man is perfection.  Absolute perfection.  It's musical theater at its absolute finest.  Funny, moving, witty, AMAZING characters, and everything anyone could ever want in a musical.

Best Actress in a Musical in 2011 was a polarizing race. Many predicted Sutton for the win because of the pedigree of the show as well as the fact that she was genuinely overdue for her second win after, in my opinion, being robbed for The Drowsy Chaperone (although I still expected La'Chanze to win). I didn't think that Sutton was the strongest performance in the group (I was in the camp that felt as though she was not right for the role) and I felt as though Patina Miller gave the strongest performance in Sister Act. Donna Murphy was very close but the show's lack of recognition severely hurt her. Sister Act, which I feel to be the "undiscovered gem" of that season that unfortunately faded into the background following The Book of Mormon, went home with nothing even though I feel as though Patina richly deserved the award. I would even say that if The Book of Mormon premiered off-Broadway and moved to Broadway this season like the original plan was, Sister Act would have probably won Best Musical.

There was a case for Foster, Miller and Murphy to win. The only one with no shot was Beth Leavel, who I'm surprised was even nominated for the catastrophic Baby It's You instead of Sherie Rene Scott for a (not much) better performance in Women on the Verge.

This is the first time I've ever heard the word polarizing used with Sutton Foster's performance.. Do you have any reviews that lead you to that conclusion? You may have preferred a different performance, Patina Miller did a great job imo, but I remember nothing but a tidal wave for Sutton Foster. She is a Broadway legend in the making.

That is my recollection as well. Before "Anything Goes" opened, Sutton Foster was not a sure thing because she was already a Tony winner. When the reviews came out, it became apparent that no one else could possibly win. There was indeed a tidal wave of acclaim for her performance which cemented her place as one of the greatest performers in musical theater.

I have been a fan of Sutton Foster for a while, but I was one of the people who doubted that she was right for the role of Reno Sweeney....but then I saw her play it. I thought she was really great in the role and then after seeing clips of her as the production progressed, she just got better and better. I feel her Tony win was deserved and was definitely a foregone conclusion. I do see why some may not be in love with her work because she can be very subtle compared to performers like LuPone or Paige....and even her replacement Stephanie J. Block has more vocal power. I do think Donna Murphy and Patina Miller were both wonderful, but I hated Sister Act and found People in the Picture slightly underrated, though not great.

I just thought of another interesting topic: What if off-Broadway musicals originally opened on Broadway? Would it really change the race?

I think back to one race in particular: the 1982-1983 season. CATS becomes a major widespread success and will run for 18 years or so....it was a pop-culture sensation and featured a bona-fide musical standard (Memory) and had Andrew Lloyd Weber attached to it......but so many Theatre people hate the show, despite its longevity (including myself, I thoroughly despise it), but the one thing I wonder is about the possibility that CATS could have been taken over by a certain musical that opened to rave reviews off-Broadway around the same time: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.

LITTLE SHOP managed to win the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics' Circle awards for Best Musical over CATS and was, for off-Broadway, a sensation in itself (running for 5 years and spawning a movie) and became a worldwide favorite performed professionally to small community or high school productions, which CATS probably has that appeal though not as strongly.

I wonder if the tour/name value of CATS would have still beat out LITTLE SHOP had it been eligible on Broadway.

In complete agreement. Suddenly Seymour is ICONIC and she would have won for Lead. Who won that year?
