I'm glad Joaquin Phoenix is winning an oscar for this work next year, there are movies, that with one scene, you can tell that's a winner, unless something fuckintastic exception comes on the way.

If he gets into lead, he'll be up against Daniel Day-Lewis. If he stays in supporting, he'll be up against Leo DiCaprio (who supposedly has an incredible character in Django Unchained). It will be hard for him to win.

Trent, I actually think being up against Daniel Day-Lewis is a good thing here. People will soon realize that Day-Lewis has already won twice, and depending on the power of Phoenix's performance, he might be a shoo-in. Why would he be supporting? I thought this film was about his reactions to Hoffman's character, who would be the supporting foil character. Sight unseen, that made the most sense based on what I've heard about the film. The reaction to this trailer across the website has been overwhelmingly positive towards Phoenix, who has proven that his stupid little stunt with I'm Still Here wasn't career suicide. DiCaprio could have another case like 2007, where he was Lead in Blood Diamond (this year, Gatsby) and considered by different organizations as Lead or Supporting for another role (that year, The Departed; this year, Django Unchained). It would be great to see him nominated twice, assuming the work is worthy of the attention. Either way, I'm waiting for him to win one too.

I'm a big Day-Lewis fan so naturally I would push for him to take the record, but without bias I think he will be hard to beat: he has a real-person character in a biopic with insane acting talent, two brilliant writers and one of the most famous directors to ever live. However, I could see Phoenix winning and I would have no issue with it (based on what we have seen thus far) as I am a fan of his as well.

Phoenix has the role everyone likes, the role that gives oscars to great actors, could even compare this role with Day-Lewis on There Will Be Blood, both crazy, maybe not as crazy as Daniel turned out to be on that movie, but I know I'm a little hyperbolic about things, just explaining my point, I think the exception could be Leo cuz he will be directed by Tarantino and he's one of the most talented actors without an oscar, but I do prefer Phoenix, I know he has done some pretty nasty stuff on this hiatus of his, might hurt his chances with members, but I consider him one of the great actors we have now, if not the best, without an oscar. And with all my guts I want him to win, he should've won in 2006 for the mesmerizing performance of Jhonny Cash but there was a equally mesmerizing performance from hoffman that year on his way. Time will tell us.

Joaquin is one of the best there is. I think I first noticed him in "To Die For", and he knocked me out. I expect no less from him here.

This talk of Joaquin Phoenix - I don't think I began to admire him until Walk The Line. His performance in Gladiator feels slimy and is actually one of the least threatening cinematic villains I think I've seen in a long, long time. That is not necessarily all his fault, because the screenwriters truly made the character seem like an jealous, overlooked brat. But this promo ... I don't know what he did, but his face looks different. If there are any fellow actors on the board, you know how hard it is to change your physical demeanor, your appearance, without making it look forced and pathetic. This could, potentially, be that kind of transformative performance. I don't want to play anymore into the possible overbuzz, but I am looking forward to this film.

can someone please explain to me WHY, after spending the past two weeks bouncing around the top five slots for Best Supporting Actor, Joaquin Phoenix was moved over to Best Actor (and immediately dropping him down in the 100-1-no-chance-in-hell section?) |
